Are Wildpeaks overkill for a TRD Sport that hardly ever leaves pavement? I love the look of these tires, but wondering if it's a good idea. Are there pavement tires that looks as aggressive as these?

There are a lot of people who run all terrains or even mud terrains on the road. Doesn't make them ideal, but there are some all terrains that work pretty well on the road. Falken ATs have decent traction for the road, though I didn't like Falken because of balancing issues and how dang heavy they were comparatively to the other brand tires in the same size. I would personally suggest Toyo or General instead, and I wouldn't say any of them are "overkill", but you probably would be suited with a road tire like a Michelin or similar. That said, the Michelins don't look cool and that factors into the decision for many.

I drive on pavement 80-90% of the time and absolutely love my AT’s. I would never go back to normal road tires. Better in snow that stock/road tires too.

I have the wildpeaks on a 2006 2wd ford ranger work truck. Smooth sailing and not loud at all. Do it.

Wildpeaks are quiet, smooth, great in rain, snow and they also last a long time. I would highly recommend them even if only driving on pavement.

I've had a set of Wildpeaks on my truck (TRD Sport) for 60K miles now. Still have 9/32 of tread left. 90% road miles. They have been great. A little heavy, but smooth and balance out just fine. I have used them in sand, snow, and trails without any issues. They have become a little noisy, but that my fault for not cross rotating them from the get go. I started doing that 15k ago and they have quoted back down.

I replaced the tires on my wife's 2017 Subaru with Wildpeaks.
Liked them so much I put a set on my 2021 Tacoma.
Yea, they look good and feel great.

Handling on the street is excellent. Very nice road manners, surprisingly quiet.
    I have no balancing issues.

I don't go 'off-road' much either, but it's nice to know I can go with more confidence than the OEM Firestones.
A few months ago we did the 21+ mile loop into Monument Valley and trust me, I was damn glad I had those tires and 4WD to back me up.

The Firestones were down to 5/32 after 15,000 miles and 3 rotations, very surprised at that as well.

That being said, my neighbor gal has Michelin's on her TRD. They look good. Got no problem with the 'look'.

Prior to my decision I spent the better part of a month spying tires on Tacoma's in parking lots, home-depot etc and giving them
a good look-see, sometimes talking to the owner about the tire etc. Do your homework - once you up the game you'll be glad
you did. Oh final thought, go to a reputable outfit to do this -

Michelin Defenders, for contrast (obviously a lot more subdued style than the Falkens). Technically cheaper than the Wildpeaks, quieter, and a little better mileage, and as good or better on road and in the rain.

That said, I have Wildpeaks now, and they are solid for road driving like everyone else says. I got them because they are better on dirt roads and in the snow than the Defenders.

If you want the Wildpeaks, just get them. Great in rain after 20k miles, and to me that is the most important aspect of a road tire.

Will add, the Michelins win in one area handily: selling your truck to an older dude for commuting (which I did about 3 weeks after this photo was taken).

Will also add, similar to the guy above me, that I like these so much that I'm planning to put the Wildpeak AT Trail (crossover tire) on my Rav4 when it needs new shoes, and we almost never take that off road).

They don't call them All Terrain tires for nothing. You will like them, especially when / if it snows!

Wildpeaks are actually pretty mild for an AT tire (compared to the likes of Goodyear Duratrac, Cooper St Maxx, Toyo RT). They'll be fine for your use case.

Michelin defenders are hands down best pavement tire. Also, surprisingly good off road.

    Haha!

When they first came out, I thought they were ugly as shit. For some reason they really grew on me.

My next set will be wilpeaks as well.

I have the Duratracs on my 4R. They are loud now that they have @30k miles. Won’t be buying them again. However they are great as far as traction

Loud and I noticed a very slight “vibration” due to hybrid tread pattern.

Otherwise yeah, beasts off road. Shitty in the rain.
