    Hello,

Anyone know if the 4th gen will have auto start-stop feature? Not that I want that. I’d actually find a way to disable it like I’ve seen some Ford Ranger owners do. Just curious.

Yes it has it. There is a button on the center console to disable it.

I hate tech stuff. If you are going to put stuff like that on a vehicle, provide an option to disable it. Nice job on that one Toyota.

Does it disable it, or just turn it off for that period of driving? Meaning do you have to turn it off every time you restart the vehicle?

Probably, since it’s an “emmisions” thing.

Sure wouldn't think this would be good for the life expectancy of the turbo...

It’s water cooled, so probably not much of an issue. Coking happens with extreme heat that oil-cooled babbit bearing turbos had greater issues with.

I just find it kind of contradictory since the manual specifically states to idle for a short time to cool down the turbo to prolong the life after driving at highway speeds.

Brother in law had a Mazda sports car with a turbo. It ran the radiator fan for a short while after you 'stopped' the car and got out and locked the doors, to cool down the turbo. If this is actually needed in the new Tacoma, the cool down, it should be managed by the truck. That adds a little complexity, but from a manufacturers point of view, it makes sense to do it automatically and not rely on the owner who can't gauge if the turbo is so hot it needs more cooling.

    Thank you.

So do I and I agree with you. I’m sure someone will find a way to disable it or have it to default to OFF.

    Good point.

I saw a YouTube video from one of the engineers of this engine. He said the turbo will have a 3” diameter coolant tube which is normally what a V8 with a turbo would use. Sounds like they over engineered the cooling system which is obviously a good thing.

I know very little about turbos except that I’ve heard they burn/consume oil. Does that mean that the water cooled turbo won’t have that consumption issue? Is water cooled better overall than oil cooled turbos?

It's more points of failure thats for sure. Sometimes the oil/water leaks into each other causing coking, and unless there is an electric water pump that keeps circulating the water after the engine is shutoff, I suspect there might be a few issues for people who aren't used to turbo engines.

Although this is based on my mostly traditional Toyota turbo experiences running Dino oil. The new synthetics and metallurgy might address all of these issues but I'd still idle the engine after say towing, mountain driving, or prolonged highway driving.

Good. As long as we can choose when we want to use it, that's great. I have one that can't be turned off and it's more annoying than anything. But it does seem to save fuel.

Btw, can you post a pic of the button? I'm curious what it looks like.

Here it is on the iForce model. The iForce Max will not have a button since it is built in to the hybrid system.

I have it on my Explorer ST. I turn it off every time I drive it. It becomes second nature after a while. I'll do the same with the Taco

Why does the Tacoma have auto start/stop?

Take the 4G Pro. This truck comes equipped with a hybrid assist motor/battery, moon roof, rear sliding glass window, lifted on 33" tires, no airdam + the less efficient high clearance front bumper, steel rear bumper and those isoD seats which add unnecessary weight. Trailhunter adds more unnecessary weight.

I can't see auto start/stop saving much fuel for the little bit of time the truck is going to idle at a light, or waiting to make a left turn. Most people probably burn more gas idling using their remote start on a cold morning than an entire week idling in traffic. With or with out the hybrid, people are going to be on the gas in these trucks with the turbo anyway, nobody is saving gas to begin with. I don't know how many times I see lifted 3Gs with a RTT on the bed going over 90 mph down the highway. AS/S is a dumb ass feature.

On my 2023 Tundra, it’s that exact same button. The shut off only happens if you press the brake pedal all the way down, but it does not shut off when you gently press the brake.

There are modules you can install to completely disable it on eBay. Or you can just push the disable button every time you crank on the vehicle.

The Tundra does take a significant MPG hit when leaving idle (preparing a winch, fieldwork, etc).

Mostly likely it resets itself after you cycle the ignition. Default is on.

We will have to see in Toyota Techstream (oem scan tool) to see if we can customize the memory of this button to change it to default off.

I have a BMW m2 and I coded the auto start to be default off. I can still use the system but it defaults to off when I start the car. It's been 5 years and I never used the stupid system.

Everyone's talking about the amount of fuel possibly being saved with auto start/stop, which is negligible at best, but what about the starter? I'm sure that will be wearing out quicker.

They’re designed for much higher duty cycles.

I can see where it saves a significant amount of fuel in congested areas where you spend a lot of time in traffic jams. Where I live there is almost no benefit.
