The manual civics do include it, I have one. The auto start stop only kicks in in neutral at a stop, I always leave in gear at lights so it’s basically useless being included on a manual transmission

I know I’ve had very different experiences with start stop, in my crosstrek it was horrible and invasive, took a long time to restart the engine at lights and the like. On the other hand, I drove a gladiator for a week as a rental and their start stop was much easier to live with, barely noticed it was there at all. I think a lot of it has to do with how the restart is engineered, some companies do it better than others.

This. It’s pretty easy to just gradually brake with a light touch and it never shuts down. I’m assuming my experience with a RAV4 is the same as other Toyotas

I think people just don't like change. I'm guilty of it. When I saw the new tacoma had it my first thought was how to disable it even though I'm not buying a 2024

I'm STILL searching for cars from the 1980s with the Auto Start/Stop feature. In the late '80s I had a '78 Buick Skylark that had the Auto-Stop feature when at idle. It wasn't a feature I wanted but the malfunctioning carburetor caused this "feature". It did have Manual-Start which involved me turning the ignition key forward while pumping the shit out of the gas pedal. :D

LOL. Come to think of it I've got an 87 Toyota pickup that came with that feature. I disabled it by replacing the distributor and resetting the carb bowl float level.

I personally find it jarring and distracting, to the point where I'm sure accidents have been caused by people fumbling for the switch in the middle of an intersection. So even if it saves microscopic amounts of fuel, it is a safety issue due to the delay and distraction of it activating at brief stops. If the system could somehow sense that you were in a logjam or receive signals from traffic lights on their duration, and only activate then, it would make sense. But all it can do is guess, so you end up with all these microshutoffs that are purely negative.

We've kind of reached the point where gas engines can't be improved in terms of efficiency without making dumb compromises to reliability and safety. Even with all the annoying tricks being put in play like turbos, transmission detunes, and auto shutoff, global population increases (and rising india/china middle class) in the next 30 years will completely negate all of the emissions gains. Then what? Will batteries be ready? Do we have fights over lithium instead of oil? Where is the nuclear power infrastructure to power all these EVs? Where are the charging stations? I'm not trying to sound like a grumpy conservative here, I just don't understand the long term plan when nothing is happening except ever stricter rules against gas engines.

I also have a Explorer ST with that auto stop start crap. I installed a stop start eliminator.

Drove a 2024 Tundra SR5 this weekend. Didn't even realize they have this "feature", it's mildly annoying usually, but I had a few times where it was annoying AF.
Sometimes the Tundra would shut down then immediately restart, causing the truck to shake like an S-10 V6 missing 2 spark plugs. The instrument cluster had a message "Auto Stop not available for climate control" or something similar, the truck literally shut down then restarted in 500ms after it realized it needed to stay running for the HVAC.

Worst part? Turning this "feature" off illuminates a bright yellow icon on the dash that looks like a CEL.... I'd want to use TechStream to permanently kill auto-stop.

F the auto start / stop 'possible' (but probable) additional wear and tear, added complexity, other factors etc. for saving a minor amount of gas.

Ethanol-free vs. E-whatever would get better returns and free up farmland for you know... actual food.

@Cincy Tacoma is this what you have? Sounds like $100 well spent! I know that on the Ford Rangers you simply disconnect 1 wire at the positive battery terminal and the feature is disabled. The down side is you’ll have a small light on in your instrument cluster. This eliminator is a better option.

@TurboDA6. I’m sure the aftermarket will come up with an eliminator for Toyotas as well. This annoys enough people to definitely create a demand for it.

The Auto Stop Eliminator I have you mount it under the steering column, and it remembers the last time you pushed the button and it either keeps it functioning or leaves it off.

Nice! I was going to install that too but I got so used to pushing the button I never bothered.

    How awful.

So, another thing that got me thinking - it's getting a bit colder here (finally!) Not brutal yet, but still. When you start out in a vehicle with the start stop, and you are doing a lot of stopping close to when you first leave your house, doesn't restarting the still-cold engine many times wear it down just that much faster?

We were always told starting a cold engine is worse case, no? How about restarting it 10 times until it gets close to being up to normal operating temp? Do any of the vehicles with this adapt to current environmental settings on the fly? I know, you could then say "well disable it until ready/ up to temp" but that defeats the intent.

It's bad enough hearing the engine start once when it's -20 and lower. Hearing that a bunch of times in 5 minutes would give me the wiggles....

Certain conditions have to be met in order for the start stop to kick in. Those have been posted on this thread.

I read somewhere that auto start stop doesn't engage the starter but just stops the engine with a cylinder at full compression with fuel and applies spark when you take your foot off the brake, restarting the engine. Maybe only certain manufacturers do this?

Just use the remote start letting the vehicle idle for fifteen minutes and warm up. Which would defeat the fuel savings of the the ASS cycling of your commute. Trying to save fuel in today's worls is a fool's errand, kind of ironic to discuss fuel savings on one if the busiest travel holidays of the year.
