    Hello,

New to the forum, but glad to be coming back to Toyota.

My TRD Off Road 4dr Double Cab 4WD is due in next week, but will a MTB fit in the bed laying down with a lockable cargo cover? And if so, any recommended lockable covers?

On a similar note, will a MTB fit in the rear cab area with the wheel off as an option?

    Thanks

with wheel off, probably yes, to the bed. Technically most bikes will fit in the cab, but it is difficult to safely secure.

In both cases I wouldn't, unless I just didn't care about my bike's paint or keeping the cables in tune.

I have put a road bike in my 6ft bed with the tonneau cover closed. I have not tried with my mtb though.it will probably fit with the wheel off.

I have a Rocky Mountain Growler hardtail 29er size medium and there’s no way a bed cover would close. I use a Dakine tailgate pad.

Yes, this was my concern...Assume the bars stick up too high? How about the front wheel off and getting it to fit in the cab? This is what I do with my SUV.....Just remove the front wheel and it lays in nicely so I can secure it easly when commuting.

I was "hoping" which the wheel off, you can lays the bars horizontal and it would fit under the cargo cover so I can lock/secure it. Most MTB'er's tend to hang their MTB's out the back when traveling. I'm looking to hide/secure it when traveling around.

You asked the Internet, you’re getting Internet answers.

Why do you want to put your bike in the bed? Transportation (protected from the elements)? Storage? Both?

Advices will vary depending on your needs. Answers should be the same. A mtb fits with the front wheel off.

For transportation, it’s not ideal because it will move around. I guess it depends how you like your bike. Mine would not be transported like that. Just watch for the occasional depress of the front brake while the wheel is removed and things are moving around. You’ll be in for a frustrating situation unless you always put a spacer in between pads (which would be a pain to constantly do).

For storage, it depends where you live. Not very well protected from thief, somewhat protected from elements except for extreme humidity and heat (cycles of). Again, probably not the ideal situation and your bike may suffer some consequences.

Won't fit length wise or height wise. My santa cruz barely fits in my 6 foot bed. I have to awkwardly position it to get it to fit. No way with a bed cover of any sorts.

Thanks...I have a Yeti 130 and a Specialized Kenevo SL and both easily fit in my SUV with the back seats down and front wheel off. Surely the Tacoma bed is longer, no? Not challenging, just asking.

No and no without removing front wheel. Also depends on your bar width. My bikes would never fit.

i have the oem tonneau cover and a 2019 large patrol. it wont fit under the cover unless i take the front wheel off, which i have done. my bike isn't carbon and pretty scratched up already from riding loose chunk rocks.

i have not tried putting it in the back seat. it may be possible with the seats up, not down, and getting bike grease all over the seats. i used to do this in my old jetta with a large hard tail.

you can get a camper shell/cap and some bed stiffeners to attach a fork mount to. that would lock.

also, this thread is very active with a lot of cyclists, road and mountain, and that custom cruise that one guy built

I’ve never tried to put it in the cab but doubt it would fit. The cover would probably close on the bed with the bike laid down and front wheel off but that’s a lot of hassle. I’d rather lock it over the tailgate like I do now or buy a nice hitch rack if you are that set on leaving the bed cover on.

Have been able to fit my Commencal Meta TR with both wheels off and with bed cover. You could maybe get away with not having to take off bars depending on what else you are loaded with.

I have a 2021 XL Patrol (looooong bike) and can put it in my short bed with both wheels off and close the tonneau cover. I only did this to secure it while I was away from the truck, did not transport it this way. My girlfriend has a Med Scout and we had to take both wheels off to fit it in the back seat (seats bottoms folded and bike standing up).

It works, but you have to take both wheels off. Good way to securely store the bike if you have to leave the truck. Most tonneau covers lock as long as the tailgate is locked.

It depends on the bike, but probably not without taking off at least the front wheel.

My large 27.5" wheeled bike will only let me put the cover down if I take both wheels off. If I take the front I can close the tailgate but the wide bars won't let the cover fit. That's fine for just going to the trailhead. If I have multiple bikes I throw a tailgate pad on.

I've nevr tried to put it inside, that sounds dirty, and I feel more secure with it under the cover, both wheels off, locked with a few cables and maybe also a u lock for good measure, and the tailgate locked, if I have to leave it in there when I can't see it. I feel like the most important thing is to have it not be visible, so the back seat, even covered, is a no go.

There is no way it will fit in a 5' bed. You got a slim shot in a 6' bed with the front wheel off. Your bars (approx 30") have to go somewhere and that somewhere is either vertical through said bed cover or horizontal through the tailgate

Lots of guessing around here, but it seems some have done it, and some have not. So my input, my 29er medium framed bike fit in a 5' bed with the front wheel removed, under a tonneau, on top of a bed mat, and in between two swingout toolbox cases. So its probably doable, but will really probably be most dependent on your bar length. Also to add, you'll have to not be in love with the paint or worried about scratches.

by the way, not all covers will let you put the bikes on the tailgate on a 5' bed (again depending on the bike), some stick too far into the bed when open. something to consider if you are shopping for a cover as well.
