'23 TRDOR, has a surging problem just off idle. Going up my inclined driveway, as I'm inching towards the closed garage door, the truck kinda pauses... the throttle applied balances with the forces of gravity trying to make it roll back. The converter is slipping as designed I guess. When in this suspended state, the engine will surge, not only wanting to move the truck forward but also increasing converter lock at the same time. So... to avoid crashing into the garage door I let off the gas, the truck rolls back, rinse, repeat.

Will a tune fix the surging, and/or change the converter lockup curve?

I’ve gotten used to that. When I drive into my garage as I inch forward to touch the tennis ball to the windshield, I just drag the brake a little and slightly make a quick motion on the steering wheel. It demands a little bit of throttle without pressing the gas, I’m assuming to get the PS pump some pressure. If I use the gas to inch forward, yeah it’ll surge and I’d probably be through the wall and in my wife’s craft room because it will surge and go further than I want.

I just had tune installed. Amazing the difference it made. No surging, smooth shifting, no gear hunting, and throttle response is incredible. OTT Tune, lite throttle, with ECT its medium throttle.

P.s. Thanks Noah from OTT, WI. He did group tune in Iron Mountain, MI.

Can't say I've had a surging issue with throttle input, but I have with steering input since it bumps up the power for the PS pump. It'll also surge a little if the AC compressor is running.

I did the trans fluid level check thing today.... 10 ounces low. The problem creeping up my driveway is all but gone.

No QC at factory, falsified dealer PDI form before delivery.

    Nice work Toyota.

Why would it be 10 ounces overfilled? I followed the procedure, exactly, everything went as it should.

Is this kinda the same issue as when on the highway and you stomp on it, the way the engine has to take a second to think about what it wants you to do and then goes "oh shit, yeah, forward" and surges?

It's called " drive by wire". Your gas peddle sends a signal to your ECU telling it to go. The ECU then decides to obey your orders, or not. That's what the " pause" comes from. I had a tune installed about a month ago and it virtually eliminated the "pause". That, to me, was worth the cost of the tune by itself.

No, this is incorrect. The processor is 300 MHz, which means it can process 300 million instructions per second (MIPS). Yes, 300 million. This is ignoring the number of pipes (which I believe to be 5) and any stall conditions that may slow it down (only dropping by 2 to 4 per stall). There's no way we would notice any sort of delay from the truck being a drive by wire type. Not to mention that a tune (where only maps are edited) doesn't make the code any more efficient.

Edit: Might be 200 MHz, I'd have to find the documentation again. Regardless, 200 million per second is unobservable.

Oh ok. So what's causing the pause then? It isn't the TCU or the auto trans, mine is a manual and it would do it too.

As you said earlier, it is "drive by wire".
