Will bear spray stop a charging bear or at that point are you basically fucked?

Grizzly man.... Timothy Treadwell. He lived with them for quite a few summers. Until he met an injured or crabby one. Than game over. We’re talking griz/ browns of course. I guess it’s worth a watch. But yes I’m the end he and his Gf get really dead, and it’s real life not just a movie.

It was a topic of discussion on the Dennis prager show back in 2007/8? And the couple were painted as the “bears are life, humans are scum” type. The video was described, as they had left cameras up? I wanted to see the video to see if their perspectives were what they were portrayed in the discussion ABOUT them. If that makes sense.

Yes he was trying to bring awareness or something to them. I haven’t seen the movie in proabably 10 years but his goal was to “help” them. And yes they got eaten with the camera rolling. Though they spared us that thankfully. It’s worth seeing I suppose. He (Timothy) was a super Wierdo but in his mind he was helping the bears.

Use the bear spray on whoever you are with and hopefully they will run into a tree or trip and fall lol. That's your best bet if the bear is intent on attacking.

How about a dog as a deterrent? As an alerter at least. I agree with those that say being noisy is important, and careful with food as precautions.

Only time we were charged was a cinnamon bear. We had salami and swiss sandwiches in a backpack 10 feet away, and we're very quiet fishermen, no whooping and hollering, so there's two things that are anti-precautions.

I firmly believe if we had taken my Lab along that day the bear would never have got close enough to us to attempt a charge.

An unusually high amount of pinstriping.
I watched a documentary on this guy. Personally I think he was a complete idiot that got what he was looking for. I’m just sad that he got someone killed that didn’t know any better.

All I know is I didn't get a shot off when the cinnamon bear charged us, came to a stop about 20 feet away. I was ready to, but hesitated since I knew I'm not accurate with the .357.

I happened to be sitting with my butt against a huge boulder by the lakeshore, feet firmly planted. I think if I wasn't planted like that I may have tended to stumble backwards, maybe trip over something and shoot myself in the ankle.

From the article I posted above. Took 3 rangers and 16 shots of .40 pistol and 12 gauge slugs to stop the bear. Bear spray may not be 100% effective but if there was only 1 person in the below situation bear spray is highly likely a better 1st option than the gun.
I wasn't a fan of treadwell even after watching the romanticized documentary first without looking into the details beforehand.
"Ranger Ellis was standing with ranger Gilliland and Willy Fulton to his left. Ranger Dalrymple was slightly ahead of Gilliland when Gilliland suddenly yells, Bear! while pointing to the right. Ranger Ellis states that he turned and “saw an adult bear moving toward the group about 20 feet away”. All four begin yelling in hopes that the bear would see them and move away. Ranger Ellis then states that he “perceived that the bear was well aware of their presence and was stalking them”. Ranger Ellis, armed with a 40 cal. handgun begins to fire at about the same time rangers Gilliland and Dalrymple, who were each armed with 12 gauge shotguns loaded with slugs also begin to shoot at the bear.

Ranger Ellis fires 11 times while rangers Gilliland and Dalrymple each fire 5 times, dropping the bear 12 feet away. “That was cutting it thin” stated Ellis. After about 10 seconds the bear dies and Willy Fulton then reportedly says “I want to look that bear in the eyes” and states that he is sure that this was the bear that chased him back to his plane earlier. (Ellis 2003, pg 3)"

When are people going to learn to stop fucking with wildlife?

These are not domesticated animals which think logically. These are irrational animals which will defend themselves and their young, or hunt you down without second guessing it, due to pure instinct.

Hell, even domesticated can and will act irrationally and do something that is out of character without warning, and they hang around us all day long (dogs and cats).

Apparently bear #141 had cached the bodies of Treadwell and Amie, bears cache https://www.adn.com/outdoors/articl...udents-stumble-grizzly-food-cache/2011/08/01/ Interesting article, cites that Herrero guy people have referred to.

Frankly, I'm happy Colorado doesn't have Grizzlies or wolves.

I dont think I have ever NOT camped or hiked in bear country. Always in a tent, no bear spray and no gun.
Maybe its a Northern thing but from a very young age I was taught to be bear aware. You are not in your backyard anymore and if you dont treat the landlords with respect they will evict you from THEIR land.
Anyhow, I have been in many many situations with bears, mostly run ins on trails and everytime it was myself or our group that came upon the bear doing its thing. Very startling when you dont see it until you are on top of it. Be calm, back away, no sudden moves and never never never lose eye contact (an old Inuit trick).
As stated before, if you want to limit your bear encounters, make noise, keep clean, bring a dog, travel in groups and keep in mind that you are never truly alone in the wilderness.
As far as using a gun or bear spray, I dont have an opinion on that. Do what makes you feel safest.
I am more scared of Cougars anyhow....they will hunt you.

Haha shooting advantage...but yes I agree with you 100%.
When I was working in the Arctic I was told stories of guys that would walk out of the trailers (built on stilts off the ground) and down the stairs where a hungry polar bear (waiting under the trailer) would clean the head off with one swipe. They would let dogs out first to ensure bears werent hiding. Different bear for sure but ruthless animals altogether when thats their intent.
