You'll be fine with a 4' bar spread. My old Subaru bar spread was around 38" or so and worked just fine with my 17'4" kayak.

All valid points. There are a few downsides to a having a topper, even if they are only one-time needs. Many businesses will deliver large items for free, and for my particular every day needs, I definitely "use" the topper about 10x more than I "don't use" it. Def would get a long bed to be able to put a mattress in it for camping if I could fit the truck in the garage. If I have to move much more than the truck can handle, yep, trailer is the way to go. I also found out it is very cheap to rent a high-side dump truck from your local rental service if you have to move multiple giant loads, and much more user-friendly than a trailer sometimes, and no trailer wobble with heavy loads. In one day I took the dump truck to the landfill 3 times for 10 ton of compost, picked up limestone from the quarry, and got a dump truck full of mulch from the landscaping center, not loading or unloading any of the mulch or compost myself. Dump truck only cost about $200 for all day.

Extremely happy with the new Tacoma! It really is light years ahead of the 2nd gen, and I have a hard time believing I will even want to trade it in 5 years when the loan is paid off, especially if they take another 9 years to redesign it. With and without a topper, it is an impressive machine no matter what your style is!

does anyone know the major differences between the Leer XL and XQ. Looks like the XL side windows open but it seems with options they can be mostly the same.

The XQ is the top of the line, headliner included, windows are different in appearance with each model also. Stepping down from the XQ with one piece side windows that slightly tilt out, to XL that is hinged to tilt out better, to XR that slide for even better ventilation. Basically about $250 price difference in each model. I was quoted $2K for the XQ, $1750 for XL, and $1500 for XR. These prices installed without any options.

Does anyone have any experience with the Leer and a windoor (side window/door) similar to ARE but doesn't look like they are too popular. I also learned today that the 100XQ, XL, and XR are all the same mold. Difference is the side windows are full glass, 70/30, or 50/50 and XQ has a standard head liner. There is currently a Leer promotion on now where you can get the liner for free or flip down front window for free.

Just picked up my new long bed Off-Road. I found a great deal locally on a used topper for the 74" bed, but it's from a 2013 year Tacoma. From previous posts in this thread, I've learned that the bed is ~1" higher than the 2nd gen bed, so the topper would likely sit a little higher than the cab.

Has anyone tried this combo? If so, does it still work, or does it look ridiculous? Are there pics to see just how "off" it looks? Just buying the truck pretty much broke the bank, so scraping together another $2,000 right now for a brand new topper would be a stretch, but I don't want to ruin its sex appeal by putting on a wonky-looking canopy. Also wondering if the tailgate might also be an issue, with the flared top edge this year.

Anyone have any experience with this? Pics? Advice?
    Thanks!

Looking at a 100XR as my likely choice and was given 3 different prices today from retailers in different cities I regularly visit. Base prices ranging from $1479 up to $1720.

The front edge is different (less of a dip between the rails), but the biggest problem is going to be the tailgate. It is much thicker and curved. I can't think of an easy way to overcome the tailgate to hatch interface that wouldn't look ugly. Shells specifically for the 2016 have a curved fiberglass piece that adapts between the window and the curvature (and thickness) of the tailgate.

    Kevin,
Very nice, I really like the way it matches up with bed contours. How well does is pair up with the top rail of the bed?

    Congrats!

May I ask what it set you back? I'm on the island somewhat frequently (when the MV Coho is running), wondering if the killer exchange is killer enough...

I think this Century is from the exact same mold as the Leer's models XL,XR,and XQ. OK I am about ready to get one now. Thanks Kevin and the others.
