I’m buying new wheels for my 2019 Tacoma. I’m bored of the stock ones. I’m getting some nice black rhinos that are red. I’m concerned about the red paint scratching noticeably when I take it off road. Will spraying the wheels with a few coats of non-gloss, matte clear coat protect the underlying red paint from scratches from off-roading, salt during the winter, little pebbles while driving, etc?

No, not from bouncing wheels off of rocks.
Use the stocker’s (with little resale) for that, then roll your rimzz for date-night/street cruisin’.

You could probably protect it from road salt with some sort of polymer based coating, but that's about it. The only way to protect your wheels is to not let them touch anything.

No. But you can repaint wheels. It’s generally not hard to do.

No coating will help from a rock or stick. Not even a key, or a dirty finger rubbed on it. Nor a dry rag, not a dog tag, and definitely not a fish scale.

It's really not clear coat if it's spray paint is it?

It is, it tis, it absolutely is if it is a spray coat. That is what a clear coat is.

A clear coat is considered a spray paint?
I've always differentiated between the 2 as a clear coat being applied over the paint but i could be wrong

Clear coat is just another coat of Paint.

They put a deep ceramic coating on my wheels when I bought the truck along with the rest of it. I travel a daily a nasty 2 mile unimproved dirt road often where I live. While I don't go looking for really bad roads elsewhere, I haven't had any serious dings on my wheels yet.

If this is something you are worried about get a wheel with replaceable rock rings

Lol, nope. What makes you think that adding more paint to a painted wheel will keep it from scratching. OP not going to help any.

The first scratch hurts. You'll get over it. After that they're all stories to tell. My Ray10s are scratched up. But O well.
Moab will do that. As well as Northern Wisconsin rocks.

Everytime I get a new dirt bike helmet, I drop it in the dirt.

With that first scratch out of the way, I'm free to ride.

Extra layer of protection couldn't hurt, but still no guaranty...
