So I've been lurking here for years and this forum has been a great source of info for my truck. I have a 98 Tacoma I've had for 20+ years. My front diff is was shredded when a gallon of milk knocked it out of 4 wheel high while I was still moving so it's done. I have a doner 98 4runner that has the same 3.4 5vz fe. I was wondering if the front diff is compatible. It looks the same but I haven't been able to find much info online.

Should be fine as long as the gear ratio, and actuators are the same (either vacuum or electric).

I shift out of 4 High all the time while driving just how did that hurt your front differential?

Agree with above, I don’t see how bumping it into two wheel from 4 hi is going to hurt your diff. Pretty sure trucks with the auto hubs are shift on the fly, and even manual hub trucks the tcase will shift on the fly if the hubs are locked in and everything is spinning the same speed. I do it all the time.

I have shifted out of 4 high with every 4x4 I had since the first one in the seventies.

Trying to shift into 4 High with manual hubs while driving is different makes loud uncomfortable noise but you would have to keep forcing things to do real damage.

Unless you franken-built your transfer case and its missing the synchronizer ring :hattip:

    and then it becomes -

    STOP,
    PARK,
    SHIFT,
    GO

What the hell type of milk gallon is hitting your diff so hard it unlocks the hubs?

I don’t have any issues with my hubs locked in as long as I’m moving and all the tires are turning the same speed, either going in or out of 4hi, but once I was in la la land cruising down the road with hubs unlocked and for whatever reason pulled the tcase lever towards 4hi and boy howdy did she sing. Snapped out of my stuper real quick.
