Will I need a lift if I get this steel bumper?

Yeah, that does seem reallly heavy. It does look like theres some big pipe running around the front in the middle in addition to all the plate steel and hoops, so that doesnt sound unreasonable, but definitely heavier than id want to run

Nah, I'm not an off-roader, it's mainly for deer.

I hit a small doe back in January, freezing temperatures and it annihilated the passenger side half of my bumper. I really was shocked that the stock bumper is really just plastic. I could have had insurance replace it, and perhaps should have... $300 deductible. It's still like that, almost a year later. Mine being a work truck, the new aftermarket front will be a business write-off but I do have to get on it.

Yeah why NOT add weight that isn't needed....The aluminum bumper will withstand impacts the frame can't. The aluminum is thicker, and with the formed shape, just as strong even though far lighter. Besides the fact the aluminum won't rust if it gets chipped or scratched. I've had both...Won't even consider steel any more.

Well it depends on the application. Knowing that the OP is looking for deer protection and not boulder protection helps a bit.

I bent the frame on a 2000 Tacoma by hitting the end of an aluminum bumper on a rock wall. (Slid down a hill into wall) Truck's frame was so twisted it was considered totaled. Bumper is still on a friends truck....in perfect shape.

It was less than a year old. No rust. No issues. Insurance bought me a new Tundra. Just took a VERY hard hit where the bumper didn't flinch. Something had to give. Frame gave out first, just in front of lower control arm.

Like I said, sounds typical. Aluminum stronger than Tacoma steel.

If you're not adding a winch or skids, then the difference between aluminum and steel bumper is negligible. It's when you do all those other things that the differences add up and are noticeable.

I'd personally be pissed if I spent that extra money on an aluminum bumper only to hit a deer, and damage it whereas a steel bumper would take the hit better.

I'd be pissed if I listened to someone who is so misinformed they think "heavy" translates directly to stregnth. And then I bought a rust prone, overweight bumper that isn't any better, just more costly to ship....

And don't have any patience for people who THINK they know engineering and structual design but insist on proving otherwise.

And who think their truck is bullitproof because it outweighs their house.

I heard the new rage are aluminum sliders to help prevent them from rusting after running them across some rocks
