I recently upgraded from an OEM spare to a full-size spare. Is my exhaust tailpipe too close to my spare tire? The heat shield is touching the tire.

I would say that's way too close

Tire damage is one thing, but I think that could pyrolyse your tire

    Yeah, that's close.

Might be okay. I don't know the Temp rating for tires though or what the exhaust temp is of the pipe

My '13 came with a full size spare...........

    So 3rd gens didn't?

Cut the pipe off on the bottom of the downturn just after the axle. No more problem.

It looks like bigger than stock tires for sure.

I'm running 285/70/R17 tires, so I opted for a "full-size" spare to match my setup. I don't want to modify the exhaust. I'm thinking about wrapping the exhaust to combat pyrolysis.

My 2nd Gen has OEM 17" alloy wheels with 265/65-17 tires. The spare is same size.

Its definitely not that close to the exhaust. Are you sure its mounted in the correct position??

But....your tire is about 2 inches larger diameter. Which could be the root of the problem.

Try pulling the tire to the left (so it touches the left leaf shackle hanger) while winching it up. If it isn't enough to create a gap to the heat shield, you can drill two holes in the X-brace and relocate the spare tire hoist one bolt pitch rearward: https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads...to-new-adventures.528480/page-5#post-17311994

    The choices are limited.

    1. reroute the exhaust.
    2. put the spare in the bed or relocate it.
    3. use a smaller spare.
    4. Do nothing....hope no damage.

I followed this same thread to relocate the spare tire hoist. I have a 33” (255/85/16) tire in there and have about 3/4” gap between heat shield and the tire. I have seen some partially burnt tires in other threads from guys who have them touching the heat shield FWIW :notsure: . So I wouldn’t keep it there too long or for extended drives:thumbsup:

When I "upgraded" my Son's 2018 DCLB/OR I went with 285x70x17's including the spare. Did the exhaust reroute and bent the spare wheel guide arms/seat up some to provide the needed clearance. Believe I also moved/placed that heat shield (shown touching your tire) on the pipe to protect the transfer case actuator as well.

P.S. - I had the spare wheel "hanger" moved/ offset as well.

(It's surprising how much it will help reduce the radiated heat. And you can get it at any auto parts store.)
