If you really want to increase gas mileage on the highway, drive 52-55. I actually drove from Houston TX to Wichita KS and I averaged 27.5 mpg in my 07 DC 4wd. Might take a hell of alot longer to get there but it works.

And before anyone blasts this claim, go out on a little road trip and try it first please.

Seems like the numbers are all over the board for whatever scientific, mechanical and human element real world reasons. I'm just going to enjoy driving my new truck and accept whatever I get.

    Cheers!

I have a '12 TRD OR 4x4 AC and just got 22.5 MPG driving from Orange County, CA to Philadelphia, PA. I kept the speed around 70-72 and did not use cruise control going uphill. I definitely babied it driving across trying to maximize my MPGs. I was thrilled with this mileage considering I was hauling 800 lbs of cargo in the bed. I only have 4,000 miles on the truck and the worst mileage I have gotten on a tank is 19.1 MPG.

I'm about to fill up my tank for the first time, after running through the first tank provided by the dealership. Judging by the fuel gauge, I'll be lucky to see 15mpg, from the mostly city-driven miles I've put on it. I'm hopeful it will improve, but am completely OK with whatever I get.

Side note: I also just upgraded from a Ford Escape. Mine was an '05 with the 3.0L V6 and 4WD. I regularly got 19mpg, even at 180k miles on the clock. I'm gonna miss that little "truck".

Here is the gas log from my wife's tacoma, double cab, off road, tx with trd exhaust. Hopefully the attachment links with post.

edit : mostly city driving, the 18 mpg was the highway trip.

edit 2 : the $ 667 is when the trd exhaust was put on among other things done.

edit 3 : forgot since someone mentioned it, 87 octane w/o ethanol. once winter starts i will switch to 89 octane with ethanol, since our winters get into -10 to -20F. supposedly it helps keep water accumulation in the tank during the winter months. all i know is mpg tanks using 89 w/ ethanol.

well i guess shame on me for not reading up. 89 octane gas w/ ethanol is worse than using 87 octane w/o ethanol. seems ethanol attracts water moisture. well learned something new and i need to go out and buy some heet for the winter just in case.

2012 prerunner DCSB with 4.0 auto stock. I drive 60 miles round trip everyday mainly 2 lane at 55 and average 19.5 every tank. The ride home is bumper to bumper stop and go for first 10 miles or so. Driving the distance I do I check every fill up. I zero the trip meter then fill up when the light comes on. I write down what the trip meter says and divide that by the gallons to fill up. My best so far has been 20.7mpg. I've tried different octane ratings and see no difference so I run 87 as long as there's no spark knock I'm not changing.

I have the same truck and get close to the same results. I've been experimenting with different octanes as well but haven't seen enough increase in mpg's to cover the extra cost. Oh well, I'm gonna drive the same distance regardless the fuel cost.

What about wind resistance? There's going to be a lot more wind resistance at 70 than at 45. Plus wouldn't 45mph at 2000 rpm need a taller gearing than 70 at 2000 rpm. 2000 rpm at 45 should be an easier load on the engine.

It's like trying to start off in 3rd vs 1st. It takes a lot more gas to get the vehicle moving in 3rd than it does in 1st.

New member here, but have been lurking since 2009. 2009 AC PreRunner v6 6speed. Stock except hard tonneau and scangauge. 35,000 miles

    Mileage :
19-20 in the city with little stop and go 30% limited access roads
    22-23 country interstate at 67-70
    24-25 country 2 lane roads at 55-60
    Never seen less than 18

Better in the summer (not much a/c used), worse in the winter
Better with zero ethanol, 2-3% less with E-10
No difference with higher octane (I run 87)
Don't use cruise unless perfectly flat ground

I fill it to the absolute top every time (but burn half a gallon or more right away). No carbon canister problems. Odometer calibrated with interstate mile markers (100 miles) and GPS - less than 1% difference. Do have the 245/75 Dunflops, replacing soon with LTX MS2's.

Stations US and Canada with zero ethanol see pure-gas.org. If less than 15 cents/gallon difference from E-10 I'll buy it. Maybe see 1 MPG more.

Retired - I drive for best mpg, not elapsed time.

He incorrectly thinks that engines don't have different loads and thinks that at 2000 rpm the engine uses the same amount of gas no matter if idling or pulling a trailer up a hill.
