Will Plasti-Derping or painting my wheels mess with the balance?

Obviously I'm going to try and keep it to several light coats but I'm guaranteed not to apply the same amount of plasti-derp or paint to each wheel, so my question is: will it mess with the balance of the wheels/tires?

    Thanks in advance

Probably not I would'nt see why paint or plastidip would affect wheel balance.

It seems possible that an uneven coat would potentially throw off the balance seeing as how tire balancing weights can be as small as .25oz or maybe even smaller. (That's just the smallest I know of.)

Unfortunately, I have no actual experience with plasti dipping though. :notsure: So maybe I should just shut up...lol

Yes the paint can lubricate the lug nuts and cause them to gradually slip off! Do not do this it is dangerous!!

I feel like a rock stuck in a tire would throw it off a ton more than Plasti-derp would!

    If this actually happens...:)

I doubt you could offset it enough to make a noticeable change in driving performance unless you emptied an entire can in one spot.

I will tell you this though, I've plastidipped wheels in the past and while it holds up fine you CANNOT get mud out of it without applying enough pressure to actually remove it from the tire. I do not suggest plastidipping rims if you have any intention of offroading.

thanks for all the replies... both serious and not

I do 4wheel and honestly this plastiderping is just a temporary winter solution.

Eventually in the spring I will paint the wheels black properly.

But they are so pitted and awful looking that I wanted to do something in the short term for pure aesthetics.

Guys guys come on you are stretching if you think Plasti-Dip will throw off balance on tires lol. If that's the case we should not go mudding cause you might get a violent shimmy or shake at 60 mph.

No free rotate and balance? I can get mine balanced whenever I want. Perks of a decent tire shop.

Discount takes care of that for me... but why would I want them to go and balance my tires when everything is coated with plastiderp or paint?

Which is why I asked the question... if it poses a potential issue, I wouldn't do it.

    :notsure:

I painted mine black recently (steel wheels, only two years old but they get little rust spots on edges and in creases ) no ill effect. I used regular restoleum.

You will eventually need to get them balanced, no? I would remove all the weights, paint the wheels, then take it to discount and have them rebalanced with stick on inner weights. Then paint the weights when you get home if you want.

Well they're balanced now, so I don't anticipate having to balance them again :notsure:
