^ exaclty i had someone tell me "I like those old tacomas" Then it hit me.....old

Yeah right, it's a 2000 with 110k shits just breaking in. Sure it doesn't have all the crappy sensors that fail and cost an arm and a leg to replace or a fancy dash full or electronic shit you don't need.

I better sell mine soon then before I hit 200k! I have a rebuilt transmission with 20k miles and a fully rebuilt engine with 10k in my clean truck with 194k on the odometer. I'll never recover the money I put into it.

Run it till your new motor is 200k+ and I'd say you'll have gotten your money's worth and more haha

At least that's what I've been telling myself, had to put a rebuilt engine in just over a year ago.

Probably. But I was there with my brother who's looking at a 4 runner. No way I'm letting my "Classic" get away from me!

Haha, had a similar experience yesterday. Rolled through the stealership to pick up a couple things from the parts counter, came out and three salespersons were standing around my truck drooling over it... Ok maybe exaggerating a little, but they mentioned how clean it was for an old Tacoma. At least here in the salt belt, clean 1st-gens are getting to be a rare sight. Calling a 2003 truck a "classic" is way pushing it by the standard criteria, but as the last remaining rust-free Toyota Pickups skyrocket in value I can definitely see clean 1st-gen Tacomas eventually being included in that category. The newer ones have their upsides but the formula is changed substantially from the quintessential Japanese small pickup.

At my local dealerships they collect old Toyotas and display them there. I'd trade mine. Only if it was straight across for a NEW Tacoma and mine would go on showcase there. lol

We can dream right? But - I'd probably miss my old Taco after driving around a new one anyways.

They were built at NUMMI until April of 2010. My truck was built in mid-March 2010 and was one of the last trucks produced there. The plant was a joint venture between GM and Toyota. After GM went bankrupt and pulled out in 2009 (they scrapped Pontiac and the plant also built the Pontiac Vibe - a rebadged Toyota Matrix), Toyota started to wind down the plant. Some speculate that it had to do with Toyota not wanting to deal with the legacy GM UAW workforce. Toyota had no desire to deal with them. It's unfortunate, as the plant was otherwise a literal business school case study for successful joint business ventures.

What did you do to need a tranny and engine rebuild at such low miles?

My truck has 147K miles, with almost ALL maintenance done, and it drives PERFECT. I would not mind replacing the U-joints, but none are vibrating yet.

Maintenance done: vacuum lines replaced, MAF cleaned, throttle body cleaned, all belts and rollers replaced, valve cover gaskets replaced, all fluids replaced, tie rods (and steering rack) replaced, lower ball joints replaced, radiator and water pump replaced, shocks and leaf springs replaced.

I like your thinking! At 145k... I would settle for $42,500. But I'm in no rush; so no low-ballers!

Classic? Sure. Last person to comment on my truck actually called it "cherry."

Now; the SR5 in Back to the Future! That joker is classic BAD-ASS! I still want one.

A dealer drooling over your truck is a lot like having a stripper tell you she likes you.

i have no idea. I bought the truck with 165k miles knowing that the engine may have some issues. Turns out the transmission fluid was super dark. From what I have pieced together from the completely worn out stock suspension, BedSlide, and the fact that the original owner took it into a dealer one month before it showed up at auction where the shady dealer that sold me the lemon bought it, drove it for 100 miles, had his guy pass the smog test for him. By the time I had figured out the issues, it was too late to go back to the dealer. My guess is that the truc was way overloaded, overheated which burned up the transmission fluid causing other issues and the aluminum heads cracked between the valves causing a coolant leak into the cylinders and occasional misfires.

By the time I had diagnosed and found out how bad the engine was, I had already had the transmission rebuilt and I couldn't even sell the truck since it wouldn't pass smog. I took the truck to Yodaman in Santa Rosa to do it right and now I am 110% confident that my truck is solid for any trip I want to take.

If I had to do it again knowing how much money I have put into my truck, I would have bought the supercharged, limited double cab with 60k miles that I thought was overpriced at 18k...
