Probably because getting arrested IS something to worry about. Not to mention the BILLIONS of tax payer dollars our country is wasting trying to stop the exchange of a simple plant....

No one is even sure why it's illegal in the first place. Rumors range from cotton and oil tycoons lobbying to make hemp illegal, to mass hysteria over alleged "hashish crazed Negros lusting after young white women" around the turn of the 20th century. I actually heard an interesting story that tied the two together.... Apparently the oil and cotton tycoons were in it with the newspaper moguls, who staked a claim in the forestry and paper industries, a direct competitor of hemp as well. Apparently they spread the whole crazed negro story via their own papers, which turned the public against the plant. But no one will really know.

It's sad that making marijuana legal could solve CA's money problems, if you see what I'm saying...

Don't worry! I was joking around with the last post. :p

I'm not attacking anybody and I don't feel attacked. :D

You're coming up with excellent points that I'd never think of!

Those aren't the ONLY reasons why it's illegal though. Those are simply conspiracies brought on by cannabis users in the United States.

So many posts here to qoute but won't...........How many people are dying from people having their head up their ass texting or talking on the phone while driving when sober? How big a dent in the stupid ass border war smuggling shit would legalizing make? How many livers are torched by smoking pot? How much easier is it to just stop smoking pot than just to stop drinking? Much easier I'd bet. If there's something to tax that generally would keep people at home and off the streets and not thinking about violence then why wouldn't the government back it? You wouldn't have to commit crimes to get it, you could grow your own. Comparisons to alcohol are not ever gonna be apples to apples so might as well give up on that. Not necessarily condoning it but there are way worse things going on that need to be policed than pot. It's a gift from nature not something man cooked up. Alcohol sterilizes wounds so it has medical benefit just as pot has it's medical benefits, another dead argument. It doesn't lead people to harder drugs any more than alcohol would or does, yet another dead argument. You could legalize it and do the same thing as with alcohol...do as much as you want at home or designated areas but if you are out of control in public, you go to jail. You'd need a license to sell it, yet more money for the government. All the negative aspects referenced in this thread can be said about many other things going on that are causing worse problems that get none of the overzealous negative attention that pot does, how bout we throw concern those directions? As with any topic, the opinions one way or the other and the "reasoning" behind them and the argument about the pros and cons could go on and on so post on.................

I'm not proud that my town, Garberville was featured in the Marijuana Inc. documentary. But it is the sole reason why so many people around here can afford tricked out lifted turbo diesels. I would personally rather see the economic benefits surrounding mj go to Americans. It deters international drug trafficking to a degree and takes a small bit of profit away from the Mexican Drug Cartel.

Link, schmink. Smoking is unhealthy, period. Doesn't matter what it is. But, apparently the dope has made you too lazy to do even the most cursory of Googling, so here you are. (this is meant as tongue-in-cheek humor, not to be an ass) Food for thought.

To make life more "interesting," page 2 of the google results lists positive aspects... go figure!

I think that I'd rather err on the side of caution, however. We know smoking tobacco is bad. What makes anyone think that marijuana, another plant, is safe?

So let's say it gets legalized, how many of your jobs would still fire you if they found out that you used it? I know mine would. It would still be somewhat regulated by proffessions.

do you REALLY think that legalizing it will make it HARDER to get?

teens...and younger...get ahold of the illegal stuff everyday...AND they are able to easily get alcohol and cigarettes...things that are "legal"

    this

    this too

you do realize that 90% of the US's cocaine comes in thru the mexican drug cartels as well as something like 75% of the US's methamphetamines...cutting weed out of their business plan wont hurt them as much as youd think

for those of you who are arguing for it...thats all well and good...i've read most of your arguments...i have my own opinion on the stuff...BUT...if the govt. could make SOOOOOO much money taxing it...dont you think they wouldve done it already? yes...both alcohol and tobacco are legal but the govt obviously found the income stream from legal use is greater than fighting it...obviously not the case yet with weed

btw...just for those who like to toss the Constitution paper argument around

    from http://www.usconstitution.net/constfaq_a8.html

i have had a LOT of first hand experience with weed (before my current employment) and had a lot of the same arguments that yall did towards the legalization etc...then i grew up, got a new job, and now i see the bad side of things...things that dont change with legalization...things like psychological dependance...you may not get chemically addicted to THC but you can get psychologically addicted...

the medical uses for some part may be legitimate...however the way Cali is handling that is a joke and they'll let anyone come up with a reason why they NEED pot...

tobacco and alcohol seem to be a major arguing point for those of you who are pro pot as well...why not, instead of added another possibly harmful substance to the list of legal things, fight to criminalize alcohol and tobacco?

its the same uphill battle against the same people...and it would make the country healthier...

dont get me wrong...im all for yall having something to believe in...but your arguments are not going to change anyone's mind

you can post 10 people who admit to smoking and are some of the most successful people on earth and i'd bet i can find twice that of people who have never touched it

you can come up with medical reasons and i can come up with legal substances that can do the same thing

you can post products you make with hemp and i can show you the same products already produced

finally...someone said it in here...dont you think that legalization of weed would bring about the very same process that tobacco took?

first its all well and good and then a handful of heavy big money growers monopolize the market (think Phillip Morris and US Tobacco) and then they'll start adding other things to your precious little plant...and then in 20-30 years people will again be fighting to make it illegal...but its ok because you wont have to deal with it...youre only interested in your high right now

Our government is fucking up this country way worse than any pot smoking is so how bout all the righteousness spouters go crusade about all the corruption and internal terrorism going on on that front and then if pot smoking ever gets near the top of the list of what's fucking up this country the worst then the "horrors" of what smoking pot causes to the country can be dealt with sensibly.
