    I know I'll probably get flamed, but my searching is sucking and I need info quick. I found a 2001 trd at the local junk yard with a killer price on the rear axle, can I swap it into my 98 4wd without major drive train mods? I know getting the locker to function takes work, but is this deal worth jumping on?

    2nd gen?

    It should fit. Why do you want to swap?

    If its a good enough deal, go for it.

    Its possible to make anything fit. Not sure how far off it'll be.

    It's still a 1st gen axle so I don't see much difference. But that's just my opinion. Pretty sure someone with more info will chime in. Nice find see if you can find the truck it came off of and take the e-locker wiring, or as much as you can.

    Same ratio as front axle, then there is the wireing issue to engage and dis engage it, might involve the computer also.

    Should bolt up but as Tom said, the axle codes need to be the same. I'm not sure whats different in those sub generations, but you could grab the 4x4 ecu, harness and switch to make it easier. Or do as Whipper said.

    Driverside door jamb. Note the one on your truck may look slightly different

    [IMG]

    See at the bottom where it says "A/TM A01A/W55"

    A = axle
    TM = transmission
    A01A = axle code
    W55 = transmission number.

    You have 3.91 gears and the TRD one has 4.10. If you are 4wd you will have to regear the front or the TRD axle.

    THIS CHART IS FOR '95.5-04 MODELS ONLY!
    The axle code for your rig can be found on the manufacture's sticker located on the driver's side door jamb as follows:

    First digit:

    A = 7.5" ring gear
    B = 8" ring gear
    Next two digits:

    01 = 3:42
    02 = 3:58
    03 = 4:10
    04 = 4:56
    05 = 3:15
    06 = 3:91
    07 = 4.30
    Last digit:

    A = 2 Pinion, Open
    B = 4 Pinion, Open
    C = 2 Pinion OEM Limited Slip
    some '98-00 models have shown a BO code of "???" on the door plate; so far this turns out to be a 3.91 gear ratio, at least for the 5sp. RZN171L-CRPDKAB with factory 31s/265s should be 4.56 with the AT.

    Bring on the flaming, but ive been searching the threads and this is the closest one i could find without asking my similar question in a new thread...

    Will 1st gen locking axles directly swap into a 96 5lug?

    I know the hubs would be different in the front, but its 2wd and i dont care. I've been bouncing all around manufacturer sites, toyota dealers, and multiple other forums with no solid advice. Has anyone on this forum done a 5lug non locking to 6lug locking swap? if so... build thread link? Thanks

    ~Mike

    Glad I found this! I have axle cod B06A, which gives me hope that I could find a TRD locking axle at a junk yard to save some money. And then I wouldn't need to regear. I never knew any of this information till I read this. Super helpful, thanks Whipper
