i have had my truck for almost 5 years now, and am about to hit 50,000 miles. the truck has some minor little problems, but other than that it is running strong. i see myself driving it for at least another few years. i am real reluctant to get rid of it, the truck has literally been around the world with me. i had it with me in the uk when i was stationed over there a few years back. my truck has traveled further than most people have.

Not always, its all about keeping up with maintenance.
I know lots of people who started neglecting their vehicles after initial warranty expired allowing problems to pile up.

Lots of people think they will...then, once the accumulation of annoying butt-biters things gets to much they'll trade on anyway.

It's rarely the engine or transmission or other major mechanical thing that goes..it's accessories like alternator, power steering pump/rack, starter, A/C, and emission controls like cat. converter, O2 sensors, knock sensors, computer and electricals like power windows, dash and light wireing.

    That's what does it.

I will keep it forever. At least I say that now. I am going to get it paid off then start pin striping the sides with trees! I love the truck but I would like a nice car to drive everyday. It sucks sometimes to take out clients and what not...

ha ha that's true I was planning to keep my 99 forever which mechanically was in perfect condition, unfortunately due to rust eating frame had to be sacrificed, although I did beg Toyota for new frame rather then money. :(

That's nice but I'm sure you know you're no where close to taxing the limit...even if your not giving it decent maintenance.

It'll start to test your patience at around 12 years, 120K...it accumulates from there.

Given the shit that I'm going through with my wife's Subaru right now, I may never keep another vehicle past 100k miles... doesn't seem to be worth the headaches.

HA!!...and that right there is the fallacy of trying to take great care of your vehicle as though you'd keep it forever!

If ANYTHING happens to it, you get no value for the meticulous care you took of it! Insurance totals it...Toyota force-buys it...whatever. If you look on it as an economics thing, you really gotta be careful about how much you pour into keeping it running.

If it's a project, OK. Doesn't matter. You do it for the fun...but don't think it's the money.

I plan on keeping it for as long as economically possible. God willing, if it's 15+ years that would be great!

I voted "Yes, I will keep it forever".

But you should also know that "forever" is about 10 years for me. I have a 7yr warranty b2b warranty and a lifetime powertrain warranty. There is no reason to give it up earlier than 10 years.

Technology will probably be my motivation to upgrade. Trucks may drive themselves at that time and I'll want in on it.

Yes, I have a contract with my two sons already to take it over when they can drive. My sons are 12 and 2, so I have 5 years with this truck then the my older boy will get it. Then I have to keep it running until the young boy can drive it. Sounds like forever to me!
