Wilwood Big Front Brake Kits for Tacoma 12.88 and 14 inch - 6 pistons

Although I find this brake kit to be humorous for this truck, I do appreciate the healthy aftermarket that exists for cool parts. It kinda sorta brings back the magic of being 16 with a sports car in 2003.

 

Have to second this. I've been pretty happy with the Tacoma brakes so far, but previous SUVs and cars that weren't prepared for ANY additional weight at all suffered great risks with a load and something like going down a very steep hill. Big brake kits definitely have a purpose if you have additional weight.

Side nugget: Yeah, your SUV and small truck can easily handle the GVWR to tow that big ass boat, but I doubt it has the ability to stop it...

 

I can’t comment directly on Tacoma rear disk conversions. I can comment on swapping a new axle in a Jeep and going from drum to rear disk.

Since disk calipers use more volume to move the pistons vs a drum wheel cylinder you get less braking at the rear. Unless you upgrade to a master cylinder designed for 4 wheel disk you get less brakes.

 

I’m interested in a conversion to discs in back. I really dislike drums and they’re kind of a pain to work on. Does a 4Runner 4 wheel disc master cylinder and reservoir easily bolt up in place of the stock Tacoma reservoir?

The only Toyotas that come with rear drums are the Yaris, the base Corolla.... and the Tacoma. WTH?

Toyota should be ashamed for cheaping out on the Tacoma. I’ve read interviews where their reps have said that drums are superior for off-roading. Perhaps that was on You Tube also.
Toyota, why then do you have 4 wheel discs on the HCR, RAV4, Highlander, FJ Cruiser, 4 Runner, Sequoia, Tundra and Landcruiser?


The only system I’ve ever done was on a 66 Mustang with the help of my dad in the late 70’s.
A mechanic told me to get a proper 1969 Mercury Cougar dual chamber master cylinder that bolted up easily in place of the Mustang single master cylinder. 1978 Ford Granada front disc brakes and spindles bolted up in place of the Mustang drum units. A bushing was fabricated on each side for proper fit.
Brake lines were extended to the front to reach the calipers. That was it. Pretty easy.

Before dropping big money on a brake kit, I recommend trying the EBC rotors and pads.

I did it after doing an icon lift with 285/70/17, substantially better than stock with stock suspension/tires.

I also tow a 6k trailer (has electric brakes) occasionally and it helped with that as well.

I did their slotted rotors (better than drilled for off-road) and heavy duty truck pads.

Only downside is quite a bit more brake dust.

 

Thank you! I was trying to decide on some new brake pads and looked at EBC but was having difficulty deciding.
I’ve tried semi-metallic over the years and used mostly ceramics in the last few.
I’ll do it.
I’ll take more brake dust for better stopping ability.

I put the Wilwood BBK on mine when I went LT and 34’s. Stops like stock which’s isn’t bad I guess but expected better. I think I’ll be upgrading to the Tundra master cylinder in the near future.

 

I’d like to add after switching from BP-10 to BP-20 pad compound I’ve noticed my 6000lb truck stops noticeably better.

 

I’ll admit I thought big brakes on the Tacoma were dumb. And I have big Brembos on my Trans Am because it used to be run on track days.

Last week in Colorado and New Mexico, I did manage to overheat the stock pads such that they shuttered a little until they cooled off. So I at least see the point of better pads for some.

Big rotors aren’t going to help on one stop, not in the range we are discussing. They do have more mass to absorb more heat.

 

The BBK really shines when I mash the brakes at 80mph with 1500lbs of dirbikes and gear headed into standstill traffic and makes towing a lot safer if you don’t have trailer brakes
