A safe, cheap and simple option is to attach the power cable to battery only when you are going to be using the winch, via a longer battery bolt and a thumb nut:

I used 3/4" heater hose to sleeve the pos (+) cable

Like I mentioned I kept my winch wiring simple with no fuses , relays or high amp disconnects . I've seen way to many times of people over protecting a circuit and having it bite that person in the a**

I've seen fuses blow prematurely for no reason whatsoever and stranding the vehicle and its occupants . Even my Drag race car with the battery in the trunk I've got the 12v pos wire running from the trunk to the engine compartment and it's only protection is a moroso high amp disconnect mounted on the tail panel

I did put a switch on mine worried that someone would goof around with my winch and cause it to start up. I was also going to say there’s at least one post on the web how some Jeep guy’s winch solenoid shorted to ground and the current went back through his master cylinder due to a ground fault and caught the oil on fire in the metal sheathed brake line, but it was probably because it was a Jeep and not a Tacoma.
