looking into a winch just trying to figure size and brand out. I was out with a buddy and his wrangle went off the trail and got stuck in the snow and mud, his winch was 3000lbs and couldn't pull him out. He said something like having to get a pulley clamp thing that goes on a tree and you run your winch cable through that.... That seems to much of a pain in the ass and what if a tree is not in the right spot. So my question is what size winch do I need to pull my 02 Tacoma out of a ditch?

So your buddy wrangled with the Wrangler? The pulley block allows you to double the winch cable back to your bumper, so the pulling force on the vehicle is doubled (i.e. 3000 lb winch pulls with 6000 lb of force) while speed is cut by half.

Keep in mind the winch hook still has to attach somewhere even if you don't use a pulley block. If no tree is available, you'd have to drive an anchor into the ground or winch off another vehicle.
