They're more expensive and I *think* you need to utilize your steering pump to drive the fluid. Much more complicated.....

My dad ran that same Miler Marker winch on his Land Rover for a long time, now he has the Warn 9.5XP. Definitely better, cost over 1K, so the MM is a better choice, and he never had a problem with his overheating.

Well if you don't have your motor running your battery is not going to power an electric winch very long anyway.

If you have the money, the WARN is the way to go, hands down. They last for decades, and if anything breaks, the parts are easy to obtain and simple to replace in most cases. We've had a couple warns in my family for as long as I can remember. My dad's Suburban has a WARN that's seen duty for 20 years without a single problem. We had it looked over once just for the Hell of it, but guess what; nothing wrong.

I'm looking at doing a dual setup too so I can do OBA at some point. Looking to get the biggest Odyssey I can fit under the hood, and add another. :D Plan on moving all my accessories to the 2nd one, and adding a winch once I get a bumper.

Man, just LOOK under the bumper! Once you realize it's a plastic shell over some molded foam and an aluminum 2x4 box tube you'll wonder how it supports anything! Let alone a winch. I'm looking at a Shrockworks bumper myself one of these days.

Yeah, I've seen those Oasis units! I'd like to get one of those since you don't need a tank if I understand correctly. They can put out enough pressure and volume to run tools by themselves. :D Then I saw how big the damn things were! And started wondering where the hell I could stuff it. I've also been looking at ExtremeAire ones. http://www.extremeoutback.com/index.cgi?exact_match=yes&product=Air%20Compressors&cart_id=6495971.3356
Smaller, could be tankless I think, and a fraction of the price! :D I still want to cram some train horns under the hood so I need to plan and budget my space. Too many deaf retirees and clueless college kids around here for the stock horn to be worth anything.

Good to know about that 12VoltGuy kit. I was thinking having everything off the extra battery would always give me a starting battery since everything on the main one shuts off with the key. Right now my bed/underbody and engine bay lights can be turned on anytime off the one battery, and that bothers me. Already killed the battery 3 times dealing with the pin switch for the engine bay one. Need to relocate the switch one of these days. When I get motivated enough. :D Would like my reverse lights on a second battery too so I can rewire them to allow me to flip them on as work lights and still drive away later. Too bad time and money never come together for all these projects. :(

I'm planning on a PC1700 too. I've seen a couple people mount them in the stock location. There's enough room for the width I think, but needs a custom bracket/plate to sit on.

Good info on the Diehard Platinum batteries! Something else to look into! Good for anyone winching and needing extra juice, and I'm sure it's easier to replace/exchange/buy them with a Sears nearby. I've only seen Odyseeys sold online.

I prefer to sit in the vehicle with my foot on the brake. I wouldn't trust a wheel chock in a winching situation.

If you're talking about electric winches - you don't need two batteries. I've been running an Optima for years on my jeep with a Warn electric winch. I also have a hand throttle rigged up to keep the rpm's up while winching - that helps keep the battery charged up. Never had any problems.

    Very good suggestion!!

Hell, if you own a winch...you should already have a tree saver strap anyway. Use the tree saver strap to hold you back(dead man).

Has anyone ever used one of the Hitch mounts for a winch before? I am getting my hitch installed next week and want to get a winch that I can put on and take off of the hitch mount but with all the choices out there not sure if one removable mount is better than the rest.

I haven't used one myself.... It could be a benefit or a hinderince depending on how you use it.
Is your hitch in the front, rear, or both?

In most cases that I've seen - folks had a hitch in the rear AND the front of the vehicle. They could utilize either end of the truck to winch from - which is neat. However - having two hitches plus the wiring involved at both ends would get costly.

If you only plan on having it in the rear hitch - it's probably not gonna be a benefit to you. You'll almost always have to winch yourself backwards rather than forwards.

I am just planning on having the rear hitch as I was under the impression with the stock bumper I can't do much about a front hitch for one. Obviously I could only hitch myself backwards (which isnt always a bad thing...) but I could also use it to help tow/rescue my idiot friends in their Chevy's lol.

You can get a front mounted receiver. Then the actual bumper has nothing to do with the winch.

Pardon my ignorance??... but does the front mounted Receiver sit low enough that it does not interfere with the front bumper? Or does it sit where you can attach something through the "venting" in the bumper itself. I have just never seen a front rec. before.
