so, i was looking at this site:
    http://www.tintlaws.com/laws/RI/

and for RI, they only allow 70% for all windows. but on many 2nd gen tacomas, the rear window and rear side windows come with a factory reduction to 28%. there is not film on the windows, its just built into the glass. so how does that work? will the cops get shitty about that? you wouldnt have to replace the windows would you?

    thanks,

The tint laws in Maryland usually only apply to the front driver and passenger side windows. Your best bet would be just call the local PD.

I always thought if it came stock, than it kind of got a pass. Can't really justify making someone pay to have new windows put in there vehicle becuase if stock tint. IE: Someone from another state moves here that allows tint in all windows, and its stock on their car/truck they won't make you remove the windows. Now its possible that dealers have to change the windows in that state to legally sell it there.

if you look at the link on the first post, you will see the rules for all the windows of a vehicle in each state.

In RI, as long as you leave the two front windows alone, and don't tint the windshield past as AS-1 line, the cops won't bother you. Vehicles with commercial or combination plates, we could probably paint our back windows black and get away with it.

On my last car, I had 15% tint on all windows (minus windshield). Had it for a couple years before getting pulled over. Cop made me remove (on the spot) the front door tint, he said the rest was fine.

I wouldn't put too much weight into that website you listed, I know the tint laws for one of the states and it has it listed incorrectly for the back sides and rear windows. I don't know the RI tint laws but I can't imagine the factory would cause you to get pulled over. I've been through RI several times and never had a problem. FWIW, I'm technically illegal in both MA and RI according to the tint laws and never been pulled over or warned.

I live in CT, right on the RI border and drive in RI every day. I've never had any problems with the factory tint, and I have the front windows tinted to 35% (CT legal)

I believe the RI law only speaks to the front 2 windows and the windshield. I know several people who tinted all of their windows and when they got pulled over for a fix it ticket, they were only required to remove the front 2 windows and the windshield.

Do you plan on moving to RI, or just visiting? If your vehicle is registered from out of state, RI can't really bother you about your tint, doesn't matter what you have. Also I would think the factory tint on our trucks adhere to federal regulations, which should override any state regulations.

ya, i have a possible job oppotunity in RI so i would have to eventually register my truck there. right now, my windows are at 28-30% which is legal in CO, but i would really hate to have to pull the tint for RI.

when you register a vehicle in RI, is there an inspection that the vehicle must go through? if so, i could see the tint being failed on a visual inspection.

Yes, in RI all vehicles older than 2yrs old, need an inspection every 2 years. If you move to the state and dont get your truck inspected within 30 days of registering it, they will suspend your registration, ask me how I know.

Getting a vehicle to pass with tint isnt that difficult, if you know someone at a shop they will usually pass it for you.

More inspection stations are getting hesitant to pass a vehicle with tint, as they could lose their license to do inspections. Still, I'm sure someone around here would do it. Also the cops usually don't bother people for tint, but once in a while they will spend a day for just that.

If you decide to leave the tint on, and you get pulled over, they will either make you peel it on the spot, or give you a $200 ticket. If you get the ticket, you remove the tint and show up at the court date, tell them your tint is gone, and you won't have to pay the ticket, just court cost ($25??) I'm not really sure if anyone actually verifies the tint is gone though.

Another option, if you can, leave your truck registered in Colorado. You're technically supposed to register within 30 days of moving here, but I see quite a few people living in RI with Florida plates, or Mass plates, etc....
