They are wrong. The text in my post above comes directly from the California Legal Code.

Also, it doesn't have to be a fix-it ticket. The cop can give you a violation which will cost more. It's his or her discretion.

F**K THE POLICE! :D.... No offense to any LEO on the board.

I drive on Sunset and Hollywood blvd Monday thru Friday on my way to work. If you know anything about these two streets, you'll see a cop every 20 yards. I've never been pulled over nor looked at. Most of the cops around here are lazy and won't pull you over for window tints alone. I actually got a speeding ticket once and he didn't say anything about the tints.

I wouldn't say f the police. They're just doing their job. It's the people that pass the laws who are the problem.

It doesn't mean you won't. I drove around for about 3 years before getting a ticket. A friend's daughter got pulled over one week after getting her windows tinted. It depends on the area and the cop. For some, it's their pet peave.

when I lived in CA I had 20% on my side windows never had a problem got a ticket for unsafe start. Also had 20% on my windows in NY never had a problem.

In VA i have 35 % up front factory rear. and 70 % on the windshelid. But I have a docotors note and its on my registartion so I'm 100% legal even thought the front is only 70% and the sides 35% its very nice inside the truck in the summer. and at night the 70% really reduces the galre from on coming headlights.

Seems like there is a little confusion here, 20% is darker tint than 30%. I don't know about Cali laws, but say 30% is the legal limit, then anything from 30%-100%(clear) is legal and anything from 5%-29% is illegal.
The percentage is the amount of light allowed to pass through the tint.

Cali law states that 70% of light must be able to pass through the drivers window. So what tint would that be

No it doesn't. You cannot legally tint the front windows. My post at the top of the page contains current California law directly from their website. You can also go to the CHP Forums and ask them directly.

First off legal tint provided by most California tint shops such as mr tint have samples in their shops, if you see the legal version then you will realize that it is almost unnoticeable that there is even tint on the windows at all. legal tint in cali is merely uv security film. I'm from San Jose and i had way more problems with tint in highschool than up in chico. BTW i think the tint law is bs, but i'm also not trying to look into others cars(cops)...

to answer your question, 70% is the answer... Tint is measured by the AMOUNT of light/ UV able to pass through the metallic film. i just got 45 % on my front check my pics to see what i mean.

Thankx for the info Redrum your truck is looking awesome! Someone stated that the stock TRD has 20% tint on the rear windows and back window. So I assume that 20% is darker than 45% ?. And that 45 is too dark for what the so called limit is of 70% even though no tint is probably really allowed

Lower the number, darker the tint

70% would most likely almost be clear..

Ok just called a tint shop. Front windows are off limits by law LOL oh well think i may be going with matching tint anyway. She quoted 80 dollars for the two front windows is that about right?

I only paid $50 to do the fronts. He gives me discounts tho. I've taken all my cars there and referred a bunch of people. $80 is probably about average..

Yes and no, it makes a noticable difference if you have all of your other windows tinted. I attempted to take picutures but is very difficulate.
From a distance like 15 feet away you can't make out clear images of people inside the truck. Once on the sides and all windows are closed up its almost like a different world inside. The cab also seems to stay cooler and I have to use the AC less on trips.
    My truck 70% front windshelid
    35% front side windows
    and Facotry rear tint.
    Front side and rear.

and inside looking out threw the side windows and front window
