Who's upgrading to Windows 10 when it becomes available? I'm currently using Windows 7 Home Premium and not sure if I want to upgrade. So Windows user why would you upgrade or why wouldn't you upgrade?

Click the little icon and say yes to it all, except subscribing to their marketing offers. Windows 10 (and Windows 8, as a matter of fact) is noticeably faster than 7, performance-wise. And they brought back the Start Menu the way you remember it. Well, a cousin of the old start menu anyway.

You can say yes to the upgrade, but replace your hard drive before the upgrade happens.

But I dont have a windows 8 cd, and im outside the 1 year purchase window from dell so they will not send me one.

And to complicate it further my hard drive is constantly spinning at 100%, fairly certain it is corrupt, so I wanted a 100% fresh start.

I was on the FAQ but couldn't find any info on whether if I lose my personal files or not if I upgrade.

Go to best buy or something that has computers open that already has windows 10 installed and mess around for a bit, make a decision after you've used it.

^Hilarious... Will Microsoft allow you to do a fresh install? I dont want to copy anything from my corrupt hard drive that currently has my OS installed on it.

It's a marketing move. They want people on Windows 10 with the Windows store. Several hundred million PCs running Windows store is something app developers can hardly ignore, which in turn boosts the number of apps available for Windows Phone.

will be keeping an eye on this. would the upgrade to 10 be transparent to your existing files? seem to recall in years past that you had to start with a clean drive to upgrade, hopefully not this time.

You can get rid of it, but it's a couple registry hacks that most end users shouldn't really be comfortable making

I've been playing around with the technical preview for a month or so. I finally reverted back to 7 because of all the bugs (so many bugs). Windows key stopped working, multiple crashes, etc. I mean, it's technical preview, so I can deal with some problems, but I was starting to think that my hardware was bad because of all the crashes.
When it ran, it ran very well. Faster load time, programs ran smoother. Plus DX12 for gaming is quite nice. I am in for the "free" upgrade, but I may wait a week or more after release to give Microsoft time to fix any last bugs. :typing:

No registry hacks needed, just uninstall the related Windows Update KB.

Most of my users would get as far as seeing the already installed 497 KBs and run screaming to my office door. No *way* 99.9% of them would/could figure out which it was on their own.

I use AutoCAD and ArcGIS on a daily basis and Windows 7 handles them just fine. I am not comfortable upgrading to 10 and having a potential conflict with these heavy programs. It may be a seamless switch over, but the potential downsides far outweigh the upside.

Also, if they are offering it free to Windows 7 users (I get why Windows 8 would get a free upgrade, they really dropped the ball there and want to make amends), I am a little skeptical. They don't want another Windows XP anchor OS holding back tons of users from upgrading. Windows 7 (like XP) is a rock solid OS and IMHO they really nailed it on both stability and ease of use. To risk throwing that away on a free upgrade to 10 is a big leap of faith for a guy who runs his own business; and not a jump I am willing to take.
