Some flags and center console divider... lots of things on the wanted list.
And it was quick when I first loaded 10 onto it. Now it is slowing down. My mouse pad wasn't working until I did some work, and I still can't fast scroll down using the scroll bar on it. If it lets me, I'll revert back tonight. This laptop has seen multiple deployments to the desert along with a lot of trips. So, it is time for a new one. Just really hard to find an 18" screen anymore for under $1k.

    That's a big machine!

If your hard on your machine maybe it's time to lay down the cash for something rugged.

Every company has compromising legal speak that basically denies you most of the privacy you think you have.

Xaks concerns come from his IT job where they don't know what Win 10 is doing yet and how it handles the information it collects. He has a right to be afraid and avoid that.

Most people don't read the 50 pages of legalese with anything anymore. We just click accept, or shit doesn't work. I think my new smart tv is spying on me.

    Yup

If it were *only* the performance of the OS on the local devices' hardware, I would absolutefugginlutely have Win 10 on my personal gaming rig. In a heartbeat. From that perspective, it's GREAT. I tested it myself several times and WISH it were an option.

    Alas...

Neither was it mine but it started a whole shit show a few pages back :).

I think everyone gets that. For a personal user who is careful with what they store digitally anyways Win 10 isn't something to be terrified of. However, if I stored a lot of digital information that could compromise me on my Win 10 computer it might worry me.

It really is a question of preference. If you don't care about your privacy, data, network use, etc then stay with 10. It's well made, fast as hell especially with SSD, and the only choice for DX12.

As noted above, my reservations are based on privacy, data, network use, etc. Thus, I'd say stay with 7 or 8, and keep kicking out MSes attempts to get your info anyways. There's usually at least one of us IT folks poking around with simple ways to remove the telemetry updates, router lists, etc. For instance....

    https://raw.githubusercontent.com/windowslies/blockwindows/master/hosts

is a list of all 107 or so domains that a Win 10 box tries to get to regardless of your wishes, host file settings, etc. You can copy/paste into a text file and push it to your firewall/router to segregate that traffic out.

If you like and want 10, I'd just do a fresh install if I were you. Since Windows is now tied to your MB it's really easy to just reload 10, or 8.1, if you want too. You don't even need your codes anymore though I'd keep them around just in case.

If you don't care for 10 just roll back to 7.

I run 8.1 on my gaming rigs, a couple 8.1s at the office where I have to support Windows apps, and linux everywhere else (this laptop I'm typing on for instance, is Mint 17)

Just curious but what hardware are you running? I have 10 right now on my 3rd gen i7 with SSD and 8 GB Ram, an old first gen i3 Laptop with 4 GB of Ram with SSD, and a brand new 6th gen A6 based tower with 8 GB of Ram with SSD I built quickly for my wife. All of those systems had either 7 or 8 on them at one point and 10 is a much better system for those machines. I'm guessing it has a lot to do with the SSD's maybe? I even had it on an old netbook with the 2nd gen Atom processor and an SSD with no problems.

The only computer I had trouble with 10 on was a nearly 10 year old Core2 system with an SSD and 4 GB of DDR2 Ram that seemed to hang regularly. It also had hibernation issues but that was because the BIOS didn't have up to date enough power standards.

Interesting. I found all the 'we want to be your best pal Microsoft privacy settings' and turned them off. The old computer is running pretty quickly now.

I have a full brain but killed a lot of cells in HS and college in the 70s. Also a lowly CPA and not IT so theres that. Windows 10 is installed and seems to be working OK. If anyone is willing to give me rudimentary (emphasis added) tips on securing personal info on W10 it would be much appreciated. You guys remind me of the old SNL IT guy skits. MOVE OVER!!!

    Lol.

Honestly it all depends on your view of risk. Keep in mind that @Xaks is an extremely knowledgeable IT guy who works for a large financial institution. He's in the business of being paranoid because what he doesn't know, like exactly what is being sent back and why, would be gambling with millions of peoples lives in the form of their identity. Depending on what you keep on your computer and your browsing habits in general your level of comfort with just running Windows 10 will likely be different than his.

Honestly, I turned off all of the default easily changeable during install options that allow Microsoft to track me and that's good enough for my needs. If you just bought a computer new I'd recommend downloading Windows 10 onto a stick and simply wiping/reinstalling windows. Then hit no on anything that even sounds a little like information gathering. That's half the battle right there. The rest, well, I'll leave that to @Xaks. I'm sure he could get your computer looking like Fort Knox with a few links that shouldn't be to hard to do if you want to go that way.

That's what I've done. I'm wondering if people just don't do that and that's why they have issues.

I feel your cell loss pain. I know how to fix just about anything around the house, but computers aren't one of them.
I went to settings, clicked on that, typed in privacy, a butt load of settings came up, clicked on general settings, turned off all that buddy buddy Microsoft shit. Computer is faster.
