With Vista being such a poor product for years, I think any release of new software is bound to be an improvement

According to the creative sight my sound is not supported anymore, so no drivers for Windows 7. Looks like I am in the market for a new sound card.

^^^ Sry man - we tried. Sux having no audio.

I'm very happy with my X-Fi XtremeGamer card in 5.1.

If looking to save some $, you could go with the XtremeAudio which is basically your old card, updated for today's systems, but minus the actual X-Fi chip. I had one for awhile and it sounded okay but not as good as the Gamer card.

Review: XtremeAudio uses different drivers than the X-Fi cards, and it is almost identical to the old Sound Blaster Live! 24-bit. The only differences are the front audio and the processor number on it. However, everything else looks the same, and the crystal oscillator even runs at the same speed as the Live!. Also, you can't select "Creative X-Fi" in Battlefield 2142.

My husband tried to install Windows 7 on his computer and it wouldn't go..kept rolling back to the original system after it went through majority of the process. He's frustrated. He removed sound card, removed all his USB stuff and still wouldn't work. He's been researching and asking other folks and nobody seems to know what it won't accept it.
He's been somewhat frustrated with this computer anyway. It's like 5 years old.

    So - today, he says...."I ordered a new computer":D

It's about 5 years old. The actual windows 7 install process gives you errors & compatibility information - all of which aren't specific enough to know exactly what the problems are. He's taken the list in and discussed it with some of his other techy folks....

Gsquare - Yeah, that's exactly right. He's already spent way too much time with it already trying different things over a period of a week... the patience got thin. I already have Windows 7 on my computer. He's somewhat rushed ....since our network (music/website) isn't accessible yet. He wanted to wait until all the computers were upgraded before working on the home network.

Yeah, W7 is brilliant with configuring your home network. Using Home Group, my desktop and laptop were practically configured automatically. Smart stuff, this.

Anyone having problems with their computers 'hanging up' for a moment or so?

It happens when I'm running Outlook, Explorer, and even itunes (those are all the programs I use).

I'll be in the middle of typing an e-mail and the curser & such will just sit there or disappear completely for about a minute or longer. Other times, I'll be in explorer clicking here & there and suddenly it'll stop everything and that little blue donut will pop up (for no apparent reason). This morning, it stopped while in itunes (curser lockup). Sometimes it'll hang up but the curser will still move - I just can't click on anything.

The only time I had this problem was when the computer would get hot. The computer has been cleaned out and I haven't had any problems prior to upgrading to Windows 7. Never had problems with Explorer or e-mail locking up either prior to this upgrade.

^^^ Haven't had that problem myself (yet) but you're not alone.

Do you have auto-update turned on and all the latest patches installed? There was a large one last week. Latest graphics drivers, too?

Here's a link you can check out from the W7 forums that might help:

I think we got it figured out, although I'm not sure what did it.

We ran some tests and tried a few things. My husband got online and read some things. I tried researching myself, but I don't know enough about any of that to feel even remotely comfortable with making system setting changes. He changed some performance setting to "High Performance" - and I can't remember exactly where he went to change that. I couldn't find it again. We also got online and got the most updated drivers (I think) compatible to Windows 7, for my monitor & logitec mouse. And discovered my 1GB of memory is probably lacking especially when I start working with Photoshop/dreamweaver. So, we ordered another 2GB of memory.

It hasn't locked up yet..... crossing fingers!

Cool. The extra memory will help a lot. W7 needs 3-4 GB of RAM just to run normally.

    None yet! It's new!
I can tell you from experience that it is far better performing than Vista - I have been running it since it was in early production (pre-beta) and available internally. It is faster, more stable, and you should have a far better install experience than any previous Windows version.

I recommend that you do a "fresh" install if you know how and are able to do so... meaning, it's always best to wipe your drive slick and start at the beginning with a new install of any operating system.

True. I imagine Jan is running the 32-bit platform. I doubt if the 64-bit version would even have installed after detecting 1 GB RAM. The extra 2 GB will provide a nice boost.

It is nice & fast compared to before the install. I'm just glad we wiped the entire thing clean. Waiting for my husbands new computer to come so we can get our home network setup again and I'll have access to our music & homepage files again. Can't wait to start playing around with homepage files!
