It seems we're all figuring out that (along with other terrible decisions) Toyota stuck us with windshields that cost $850 to replace.

We need to put together a DIY on this. I'm willing to cover the costs and donate my truck and do the write-up. Anyone have the wherewithal in Norcal?

UPDATE- I can now personally confirm that no "recalibration" is needed on our trucks. That Safelite $300 bonus charge is 100% nonsense. If you pay for it, ask them to fill up your blinker fluid while they have the hood up. Thanks TW for the data and your information.

Alright-- looks like I'm gonna be the pioneer.

I'm going to the dealer Tuesday to get them to uninstall all radar and pre-collision systems to avoid the "post-windshield replacement calibration" which I think is largely responsible for the $850 bill.

The whole post calibration is a scam, ok well not a scam but its hit or miss if you need it recalibrated, I've done tons of windshields on newer acuras Toyotas ect ect, (pretty much anything that has lane departure they say needs re calibration) and none of them had to be recalibrated, (I actually did a 2019 taco the other week) recalibration was not needed. Go to an independent shop get a quote without recalibration.

its the sheeps that think having the Toyota stamp is worth 800 dollars, then complain about the price.

I had Pinkington on my 2014 taco. I couldn't tell the difference between OEM vs. Pilkington.

South Carolina has a no deductible provision for windshields. I just got one and didn't pay a cent.

3.5 years ago (Nov 2015) the wife and I bought a new 2015 Highlander XLE. We drove it that week up to northern Utah for Thanksgiving at my Son's. On the way home, we were out on Route 66 (two lane road) between Las Vegas and 29 Palms when a truck pulling a trailer threw up a couple of rocks at us. Bam bam...first hit and left a mark, the second hit and cracked the windshield. The thing wasn't even two weeks old!

Got home called AAA and they suggested a windshield company to go through. Since the car was so new, I asked for a Toyota Windshield. I was shocked to learn it was $1,500 to replace. But since I had changed my deductible from $1,000 to $250, it wouldn't have mattered if it was $500 or $2,000, I still only put out $250.

...^^^... Go to ... SAFELITE .... they did a big Honda Ridgeline windshield for me for $425.00 a few years ago.

IMO ... good quality aftermarket glass like PPG is actually better than OEM glass.

because the bullsh1t technology in our trucks requires a "recalibration" now just for a stupid windshield!!!!

Because what i've learned is a lot of people who are price sensitive buy 3rd gen tacomas. That's the soft language way of saying broke.
