Today I noticed an eight inch crack on the passenger side just left of my rear view mirror. No rocks or debris hit it....Is this still covered under the manufactures warranty? Defect?

The dealer might play ball with you, but I highly doubt it.

I know that I would say no, because something hit your windshield. Glass doesn't spontaniously crack.

How are you claiming that it was a factory defect?

What are you basing it on?

It's a '13, there is almost no chance the windshield can just crack on it's own or due to a manufacturing defect. Just doesn't happen. I doubt Toyota is going to accept it as a warranty item.

I have a feeling many Tacoma owners have had defective installations and Toyota simply covered this up because there aren't many people like us who specialize in glass.

I know I did. My crack started from the edge and "ran" when I turned on my heater when I had a ton of snow on the outside of the glass. It did not "run" from a chip.

Recently had a cracked windshield incident on my '14. I contacted Toyota and was told their warranty doesn't cover glass. (You can buy glass coverage from multiple sources if you choose to.)

So did Toyota replace it under warranty?

Thanks for the info guys. I took it to the local dealer and the manager wanted to use the "ball point test" to which it did not pass...go figure, so 3 days 100 miles into my first taco and I'm already having to replace a 1400 dollar factory windshield.

They "said" it doesn't cover glass, but it DOES cover manufacturers defective labor.

You're not doing it to frozen glass though :D

and you need to stop doing that man! I know a guy who almost died when the flame chased back to the bottle. He is horribly disfigured. At my old job we used heat guns and man did that suck....took 10 minutes to heat it up. Now we use tape measures. If you have a fat max and it goes bad cut it in lengths about 5-10" long and taper the edges. It will cut the inter-layer perfectly every time and keep your fingers farther away then a razor blade.

I never notified Toyota. It started at the bottom under the blacked off portion and ran about 10-15" across then back down so it wasn't in my vision and I wasn't about to waste my time fighting Toyota over a $165 windshield. I have AAA so I just had them replace it because they warrant them for 1 year.

Please explain this test to me? I'm a 3rd generation glass guy with over 20 years experience and never heard of it...

If it wasn't visibly broken (and detected) when you bought it, it's not covered.

I'm not going to argue... I don't have my warranty info on me nor do I care to ever look it up tonight when I get home. Heck I never even said anything to them when it cracked.

I just know every warranty I have ever read in my entire life covers faulty labor.

Ill believe you if you post the warranty exclusion.

$1,400? They are scamming you. As said above the glass should be under $200.

That sucks man.. I'm getting a new windshield Monday for the same reason. a 4" crack appeared on Monday and has since grown to 10" or so.. right from the bottom middle. I can see a small divit where a rock hit it in the black edge border.

I will... insurance will cover it, minus deductible. But I'll make sure to get the full price to post.

The "ball point pin" test is where they run a pin down the crack and if it catches then it is not covered under warranty.I should clarify its 1400 for toyota glass and 350 for some random guy to come to the dealership and replace with aftermarket glass. My deductible on ins is 500 so I'm well below them paying for it. :) ready for summer in the taco
