Need to replace windshield - what is a good way to go - take it to the Dealer for an OEM or one of these mobile replacement services that come to your house?

I don't believe my insurance covers it as a road hazard (Geico), but have to review my policy to find out the facts...

    Any recommendations are appreciated!

The state you are in matters. Florida law requires all insurers to replace windshields.

So, that's your first step. Find out what your options are in your state.

You are correct about GEICO. They will do the chip fix but replacement goes against the deductible.

Safelite did a shit job on my chip repair and between them and GEICO did nothing to rectify so I will not be using Safelite again.

I had mine replaced last year and it was $350.. I actually like safelite better than most of the glass shops, specifically for the way they do rock chips and that they are at least around here OCD about making sure any paint scratches under the gasket get primed and painted before reinstalling the glass.

I have been thinking about a new Taco in the next 2 yrs. Currently own 2 1st gens and most parts are cheap and I do all my own repairs. Man, you guys are giving me some "scared straight" talk here on 3rd gen $$$.

I had a mobile replacement company (American Glass) put in a windshield for $189 just last Fall. Did a great job.

Depends on the state. "Clearwater Bill" already mentioned Florida. Insurance has to replace it with no deductable. In my 2nd Gen Florida days, I just took it to Safelite.

    No questions asked.

As mentioned the glass stuff is state dependant.

Safelite chip repair for one in my case was far from transparent and would leave a streak upon every pass of a wiper. Hit or miss like everything and the 5 plus times they fixed things no problem but the lack of time spent and response of "thats the best repair I have seen" was a bit underwhelming.

I've had 3 replaced in Florida, they came to my house, and it never cost me a dime.

Had a repair done by safelite few months ago and was told that geico will replace a new vehicles windshield for the first two years with an OEM one (toyota marked and with GoPro mount). After a vehicle is two years old you get the el cheapo with the option to pay the difference for an OEM glass.

I had a local glass company, family owned, replace mine for around $220 if I recall correctly. They did a great job and did note how thin my OEM glass was.

Same, it's rolled into the comprehensive.

They were able to repair mine...I had just got the fkn thing tinted and didn't want to pay for that again! They did slightly raise my ins rate.....it's probably worth shopping around every so often.

The oem glass is pilkington, you really don't want to get some shit brand of glass. I had one that had a defect in it and it had a wavy area that drove me crazy.

In Virginia here. Had to replace mine a few months back due to a chip that turned into a crack. Insurance with GEICO and replacement was below deductible of $500 so ended as out of pocket. Called several dealerships in the area and all referred me to local shops. None did it in-house. Replacement is also Pilkington with GoPro mount. With sensor recalibration included it was $365.

Three states — Florida, Kentucky, South Carolina — waive the deductible for windshield replacement and repairs as part of comprehensive coverage as mandated by state law because driving with a damaged windshield is dangerous. They are called “zero deductible” states.

Wow. Lots of high prices! Glad I have Allstate and $100 my cost for glass/comprehensive. I had Novus Glass to do it. Results were good.
    Good luck to you!
