My 2018 windshield was hit by a rock, which developed into a large crack the same day. I called 5 different places in my county and they all quoted me $900-$1000 due to the re-calibration. I asked all 5 places if I could sign a waiver and not due the re-calibration, but they all refused.

I ended up submitting a comprehensive claim to my insurance, and paid my $500 deductible. My insurance also said the re-calibration was mandatory. My insurance was contracted with Safelite and they promoted Safelite, but I was able to go through an independent installer that my family has had good luck with in the past.

The total invoice was $979. Ridiculous.

My mom used safelite and the guy took 5 hours to do his job (should only take 1 hour). The damage was not too significant even though some dude threw a massive rock over a bridge and it hit my moms highlander right on the top left of the windshield. Not sure if it was attempted murder but oh well. (happened 5 years ago)

    Incompetence...

I had one of the rear window sections get broken so had them do the replacement.

They dented the cab and gouged the paint in a few places, in addition to ruining all the plastic trim pieces in the rear of the cab. On top of all that, the window wasn’t even installed correctly, there was a gap between it and the cab.

Truck ended up in the shop for 10 days. Removed front windshield and rear window. Removed the bed. Fixed Dent. Repainted and blended paint. Installed new front and rear window. Replaced all interior plastic.

Safelite contacted the body shop i had doing the work (covered by safelite’s insurance) wanting to do the glass work. The body shop told them no, it was getting contracted out to who they always use for glass work, especially since they were the reason all this happened in the first place

Truck had 20k miles on it and was less than 6 months old when all this happened.

$330 off brand glass installed on my 20 Sport and a calibration was not done. Everything works just fine. Rock quarry truck traffic near me usually results in a windshield replacement every 6-9 months.

    Wow, what a headache
My 2020 cracked in the first month.
I've been letting the crack grow....
Putting off the new windshield as long as I can.
I missed it when it was just a chip, it was hidden by the emission sticker.

I recently replaced my windshield through Safelite. Everything went well and haven't had any issues yet.

    not 1st hand experience

was told by a glass shop owner

to leave a window cracked just a little

when new glass is installed & glue has not quite set up

slamming the doors on a near air type interior

can on occasion ' pop ' or perforate the bond

can distort & make the replacement askew

got hammered by something (a rock?) on the interstate early morning before the sun was up. Heard it hit. Didnt see (more like, didnt look...) the crack until I was leaving work. 18-20" running across my line of view. Rock had hit just below the top trim.

Made an appointment thru my insurance for replacement. We'll see how that goes.

I have the gopro mount too. Ive call the shop to ask that they are replacing that too. I need it! The 800 service twat that answered in some other place than the local shop cant answer the question...

    As for insurance and deductibles...

thats regulated by state. Some states mandate that windshields be replaced with Zero deductible (I know FL is one of those, dont know what others there are). Otherwise, the deductible is spelled out in your policy.

Not sure if its already been said....but radar is in your grill, lane departure and high beam sensing thing is in the camera in your windshield. That being said, I replaced my windshield. Didn't recalibrate anything, works fine.

The worst option is to get a GoPro mount and 3m the sucker to the windshield lol.

My last truck has quite a bit of putting and at least 2 rock chips. But despite 90°+ days and -25° days and colder, it shockingly never spread. Hoping to not have anything happen with my current truck!

Posted about my windshield recently. Got a chip, Safelite filled it. Chip spread into a 2 ft crack. Replaced the windshield with whatever Safelite put on there, I went through my insured. Without insurance it would have been around 930. A week later(yesterday) driving home, a rock hits and another chip. Headed in tomorrow to get it filled. Chances of me getting another windshield this month feels pretty high...

$740 at Safelite last week for my 2018. $500 deductible and insurance paid the rest. Kudos to the technician for saving and reapplying my toll tag and state park entry sticker.

Just got mine replaced at Safelite on Thursday. They used Pilkington glass. Just an FYI, they will not calibrate if you have a lift or larger than stock tires anymore. Had to sign a waiver saying that I was aware of that. I insisted that they not unplug the camera and all is working as it should. Mine was re-calibrated back when Toyota would still do it at the dealer when the lift was installed. So if you are not sock height just insist that whoever is replacing it doesn't unplug anything.
