Sun block and clothes seem like a decent solution that don’t increase your risk of hurting yourself and someone else in a car crash.

If the state does recognize your exemption then go to court and get it tossed out
Otherwise, pay the ticket and move on - removing tint is a PITA

    Me too - older/wiser/calmer
There was a point, when I was about 35, that LEO stopped bothering me/viewing me as a threat

I still drive like a dick, just a tad less aggressively + my car looks way less suspect than my prior car, so they just seem to leave me alone. I should have been stopped a few times [speeding+expired tags] but they pull up next to me, take a good look and go on their way :yay:

I was not aware there was a specific medical exemption form for a dark window tint issued by the state government, holy crap that’s oddly specific and I learned something new today. I’m not being facetious.

By the way, I have a blown left pupil from a childhood accident and I have always addressed this issue with prescription sunglasses. I will ask my ophthalmologist about this the next time and I’m curious to see what he has to say.

Cars don’t use standard window glass, which is what you’ll get in your home windows. A windshield has plastic sandwiched between two pieces of glass and effectively blocks out all UV light. Side and rear windows don’t have the same composition, so they do let some UV-A pass, but it’s less transmissive than regular glass too. More importantly, since our eyes aren’t able to perceive UV, it’s possible to make blocking films that are totally transparent and so the need for tint is lost on me. I’m also not understanding the process of getting in and out of the car or what happens outside of the car. And I say that as someone who slathers on sunscreen whenever I go out because I take medication that increases my risk for skin cancer. A tint would only make me more lackadaisical about sunscreen (it’ll just be a short trip), because anytime I drive anywhere to do something I’d have to screen up anyway.

    Straight from the vehicle code:

26708. (a) (1) A person shall not drive any motor vehicle with any object or material placed, displayed, installed, affixed, or applied upon the windshield or side or rear windows.

    (2) A person shall not drive any motor vehicle with any object or material placed, displayed, installed, affixed, or applied in or upon the vehicle that obstructs or reduces the driver’s clear view through the windshield or side windows.

    (3) This subdivision applies to a person driving a motor vehicle with the driver’s clear vision through the windshield, or side or rear windows, obstructed by snow or ice.”

subsection (10) Sun screening devices meeting the requirements of Section 26708.2 installed on the side windows on either side of the vehicle’s front seat, if the driver or a passenger in the front seat has in his or her possession a letter or other document signed by a licensed physician AND surgeon certifying that the person must be shaded from the sun due to a medical condition, or has in his or her possession a letter or other document signed by a licensed optometrist certifying that the person must be shaded from the sun due to a visual condition. The devices authorized by this paragraph shall not be used during darkness.

26708.2 states sun screening devices shall meet the following requirements:

    (a)
The devices shall be held in place by means allowing ready removal from the window area, such as a frame, a rigid material with temporary fasteners, or a flexible roller shade.

    (b)
Devices utilizing transparent material shall be green, gray, or a neutral smoke in color and shall have a luminous transmittance of not less than 35 percent.
    (c)
Devices utilizing nontransparent louvers or other alternating patterns of opaque and open sections shall have an essentially uniform pattern over the entire surface, except for framing and supports. At least 35 percent of the device area shall be open and no individual louver or opaque section shall have a projected vertical dimension exceeding 316 inch.

    (d)
The devices shall not have a reflective quality exceeding 35 percent on either the inner or outer surface.

Welcome to stupid ass California, hope you can afford to leave soon.

How do you know it was UV? All that film on your windshield was the offgassing from the plastic drying it out… I think the heat had something more to do with it than anything else.

I always thought the exemption for a front license plate in California, is a rear license plate from Arizona :)

This thread is hilarious. Cracking me up. I have never thought about tinting my windshield. Bet it would suck driving at night.

I’ll skip my CA rhetoric since others have already taken care of it.

I got pulled over for tint in my wife’s old car by a Florida state trooper. Got a ticket as the front side windows were something like 5% or similar. Ticket was maybe $100 and I was told to remove it. I called the local dmv and they said if I kept it, I was simply at risk of getting another ticket for the same amount.

20 years in FL with three vehicles with illegal tint (not on windshield) and have only gotten one ticket.

I’ve had plastic vents go white while the dash is intact in two different cars. I can test the windshield tomorrow. I’d do it tonight, but my little UV flashlight wouldn’t be able to manage a tiny fraction of the sun and the neighbors already give me enough funny looks.

Dark tint should be required in FL as a road rage preventative measure. People are less likely to shoot at you if they can't see what you're doing inside.
