I just heard a suggestion on how to keep your side mirrors frost-free in the winter and wondered if anyone has used this method for people who don't have heated side mirrors. The method is to take a plastic bag big enough to cover the side mirror (freezer bag?), then cinch it down with rubber bands on the end. Has this worked for anyone that doesn't have heated side mirrors and is there anything that you do in winter that keeps them frost free, as it's a pet peeve of mine?

Hm I might try that. I was going to consider just keeping a spray bottle of RainX defroster near the truck and squirting them if I need to. It works great on windshield frost

Heated mirrors aren't in the budget, but would be a great mod. I posted this thread for people who can't nor don't want the mod. My biggest peeve is the ice storms we get in New England that coat the side mirrors so thick that it takes days to melt and makes backing into my driveway more difficult, but thanks @Unchained 5150 for that info.

Shaving cream on the mirror will do the same thing. Put it on them wipe it off and boom good to go

They make that aerosol de-icer spray, like $8 on Amazon. I'm sure you'd get quite a few uses if just on your mirrors.

Thanks, I will look into the RainX defroster. After I started using the RainX window washer fluid, there is no going back, but I seem to like all RainX products I have tried.

I see these post and I wonder. I live in the snow belt and can not remember a time my side view mirrors were frosted.

I've never had heated mirrors so don't really know what I'm missing. Is this really that big of a deal to have heated mirrors?

The washer fluid is what Im talking about. I figured if it defrosts my windshield it would my mirrors and other windows too. I love that stuff.

I live in the midwest and have been driving for almost 14 years. My Fords had heated mirrors. I used them once.

    OP

I have spent a bunch of money on this thing called a house, and it has a box attached to it where you can put your truck in it, and no frost occurs inside this enclosed box.

If you live in an area were you get ICE I would not use the zip lock bag because it can freeze to the mirror.
Really if you get frost just scrape it off with a scraper. Takes a few seconds.
Also glass coatings or putting a paint sealant on the mirror will help bead condensation so you get less frost. I like that method more than a zip lock bag that can freeze to the mirror.

Weird I get it all the time during the months of Jan and Feb. Guess it really depends on climate.
The thing I find frustrating is that during real cold days ( atleast cold by my areas standards) the windows wont go down due to being frozen. Never happened on the other cars I've owned.

Luckily my doors and windows have never frozen shut *knock on wood*

Now I have made the mistake off running windshield wiper fluid in sub zero temps and having to pull over because it froze like instantaneously.

This is something my wife sewed up from some scraps, for her vehicle. One blew off the 1st night, so she added some elastic. She says it saves her a good bit of time in the morning. My new truck has heated mirrors, but it was never an issue with my 00 Tundra.

LOL. I guess those that don't get mirror ice and have a garage never park outside long enough when away from that box to have ice form.

Mostly stock with a few minor mods.
It must be a humidity thing. I park outside and have been living/driving in MN for 29 years now and have never had heated mirrors on a vehicle. Never noticed a problem. There are days when things get coated in ice from freezing sleet, but I guess I just chip away at it with a scraper and look over my shoulder before I change lanes.
