    Hey guys.
I've really wanted to go on a snow trail and do some camping this winter.
Is anyone planning on doing a similar thing?

It will be awesome in Plumas with snow. I'm down. Got some MT's on order with snow wheeling in mind.

I hope my sidewalls make it to winter. But I may be on Toyo's by then, hopefully they are just as good in the snow.

Nice! I was looking at Toyos, but ended up going with Bighorns. $805 for 5 before tax. Pizza cutters again :anonymous:

I'm planning on doing some snow camping this year for sure. I know of at least one trip to MT Shasta sometime in the spring once the snow consolidates. I'd really like to get a winter ascent under my belt so it'll be sometime before March 20th at 6:29AM.

Also, going to do at least one trip to Yosemite Valley sometime after Christmas, ideally after a snow storm. It's pretty sweet...no one is there.

I haven't really thought about snow wheeling yet. Maybe a trip up to Mendocino National Forest. I've heard that's pretty nice in the winter time.

Can you drive right into Yosemite valley during winter? That's sounds awesome.

The west side is always plowed. The east entrance is generally unmaintained from 395 through the Tioga pass towards Yosemite Valley. Though I think it would be kinda cool if someone who owned a plow kinda just plowed it. lol. But I'm pretty sure they figure well it's the one time of the year where they can make sure humans do not disturb nature. Temperaturewise it's not that bad. Only in the teens on January 1st. But after the night falls the water on the road refreezes and cars start slippin and sliding all over the place.

Oooh, that reminds me. I know some hot spring in Navada that require high clearance to get to. Maybe 4wd as well, but definitely high clearance.

It's best in winter though you aren't able to drive out to places like Tuolumne Meadow or Glacier Point. Tioga Pass is closed in winter-mostly because there are some massive avalanches as you get closer to 395...I wish they'd build snow sheds in those places and keep the road open ;) Glacier Point is easily accessed via cross-country ski trip (you can camp pretty much anywhere along the road with a permit).

What I like is the lack of people and when it snows in the valley, the quiet. Very quiet.

Thanks for the info fellas! It would be a family trip, so probably no backcountry exploring. The cold won't really be an issue with the heated camper. Snow camped many times in the 4wc on my old Scout, and the new one is way more insulated. Mainly looking forward to the lack of people.

The ski resort is a fun spot to hang out. You can also hike down the Glacier Point road to the meadow for some fun in the snow. The valley doesn't get much snow so Glacier Point area is usually best place for snow.

There's some good camping if you want to get away from people down there. Of course that would be tent camping.

works for me most of the time. Air down low, have recovery gear, and wheel with others who can give you a tug if you need one.
