    Try bumping either the tailgate or the cover with your hand. Thump the tailgate like you are closing it. Same on the cover. The idea is to break the ice where the cover and tailgate meet.

    Some where around here (Maine) I have some spray that helps keep things from freezing, may be as simple as WD.

    If you have a cap or tonneau you can carry some serious gear like a long handled snow shovel, an axe, maybe a chain saw. Tow strap. Jumpers, all of the usual winter kit, like extra warm clothes, tarp.

    And ballast. Even a 4 wd truck runs better with 300 pounds or so of weight in the rear, especially since you spend most of your time in 2wd. Gravel can be handy to get you out of trouble.
