Anyone have any experience with installing and/or using wireless backup cameras?

Wireless would solve several wiring issues. Run POWER off of backup light pigtails. This would POWER camera ON when backup lights are ON, and OFF when backup lights are OFF.

Wireless transmission to LCD receiver/screen, powered off of cigarette lighter or such at dash.

Makes a lot of sense, but someone said something about wireless being "unreliable" (and they were selling wired cameras.)

Please respond if you have real experience or knowledge (e.g.:"I know..."), and not just "conjecture" (e.g.: "I think...).

    Thanks!

They are right and it's unreliable. My friend has 1 hook up to his truck and the signal sometimes work and sometimes don't. Not sure if it's a cheap brand he bought but he says it's better to get it wired. He uses it to backup to tow his boat.

Would depend on the device placement and wifi device you are using.

The tailgate/bumper would not be a good environment for an antenna. If the camera has a small form factor they will most likely be using some kind of chip antenna and/or PIFA that is integrated into the camera housing. This will perform terribly even if the distance is only the length of your truck.

    Just my .2 cents.

EDIT: You could try a mock up with a gopro 3 but look at the device cost at over 400. This would work however there is also lag between the actual screen view and what the camera is seeing.
