I have the Qi wireless phone charger in my truck,, but I noticed that it really makes my phone hot when charging, my home charger doesn't do this, so is this natural for the Toyota or is there something wrong with mine?

Normal. It has to do with the inability to dissipate heat properly. It's not limited to Toyota, I don't believe. Several threads were dedicated to trying to make a better system, but ultimately no one was successful at making anything that looked OEM. It is more meant for charging for a short time anyway. Anything longer and it should be plugged in.

You probably could. I don't know how much good it would do since the battery is the main source of heat and that's on the bottom of the phone. In the winter I can usually get about a 10% charge without issues on my 45 minute commute. In the summer, I'm lucky if I get half that time before the phone is hotter than I feel comfortable. For the record, I'm never worried the battery will explode but, like you, I worry about the longevity of the battery. Also, since these are generic QI wireless chargers, they're not very fast even if properly ventilated. But that's by design.

    all tore up already
It will make a real weird alert beep noise and flash the green and orange lights when it gets too hot. At this point it stops charging

I have a case on mine with a small metal plate that alow me to attach phone to magnetic holder. If that sits near the charger it also seems to make it heat up faster. YMMV

That's if you don't catch it before then. My phone will go into trickle charge mode if it gets too hot and pretty much maintain its current charge. That must be before what you described because I've not experienced that yet.

Well this stinks... I was really excited when I found out I had this charger, but its not worth the risk of loosing my phone with it overheating everytime I wish to charge it. Of course I could probably charge it till I swap phones in a couple years and it never have an issue

I will just stick with the plug to charge while I travel, my home wireless charger doesn't even get my phone warm so I know it's possible to charge without heating it,, would be nice if they came up with a fix or replacement .

My phone is coming up on nearly four years of age. I charge it on the Qi pad without issue. Most road and day trips it will be between 4-5 hours of use before the overheat alarm goes off, and I've managed to set it off frequently.

So far the phone battery is still going strong.

I should amend my last statement. A lot of heat comes from the charger itself as well. A lot of wireless chargers (particularly the fast ones) actually have fans built in. The main issue is lack of airflow. I haven't heard anyone try adding any holes to the sides of the console underneath the charger. You certainly shouldn't be afraid to use it though.

Also, if you hit "quote" in the bottom right of the comment you're responding to, the person you're responding to will get a notification.

    Like, so many.
Mine charges way faster than that. I wonder if the phone case plays into it.

I was actually just coming here to add that. In general with wireless charging, cases make the charging more difficult so it is slower and creates more heat. It'll definitely be more efficient without the case. As a matter of fact, I just did that with my phone on my commute today. The phone charges faster although it did still produce some heat. But enough I was still comfortable with it.

I was wondering about trying to remove my case,, I will be taking a long road trip next week and I will try it, I'll just test the temp after 30 minutes or so and keep an eye on it..

Mods? We don't need no stinking mods.
That Qi charger is trash. Even when it isn't cooking your phone, it's a really slooooow charge.

Best to use a charger in the old cigarette lighter or better yet, take advantage of the most excellent Android Auto (or Apple Play) with a USB cable.

I never put cases on my phones. Maybe that's why I dont have a complaint against the charger.

In the az summer, the wireless charger is pretty much useless. Its so hot the phone gives me an error message saying the phone is overheating.
