Reviewing the video I found, and the products available for installing a brake controller on a 2012 Taco, I crawled under the dash to find the connector I needed and found this.

The white, top right one is hard wired into the harness in the location I expected to find a square connector, and appears original. The light grey one on the left was plugged into the white one, no wires, and appears to just be an adapter to go from the white one to something else. I don't see the square connector that is used to plug in the brake controller, that is used with this part...

The way I understand it, Lexus and a few select models of other Toyota products possibly used another connector. I haven't found any brake controllers that look like they will plug into the connector I have.
So do I have the odd unicorn truck? Or is the connector I have found just something else and I need to remove the kick panel to look further? Or has someone run into this and can clue me in?
Many thanks to anyone with useful information...

I contacted a guy that does mods/aftermarket accessories for a Toyota dealership and he showed me a picture of the connector I have... right next to the one I've been looking for... both on the same wiring harness.

So either mine is down behind the kick panel, or up under the dash where I didn't see it... or it isn't part of my harness.

    Tomorrow I start digging deeper.

Mine (3rd gen) was buried deep behind the kick panel AND behind a huge bundle of wires such that the connector end was not visible until I separated the wires and physically pulled and shoved stuff around, then I barely noticed it.

the plug you’re showing in this pic for a 2012 Tacoma is the wrong plug. The one you’re looking for will be more square.

Yup, found the proper connector up under the dash instead of where the video stated. Controller went in easily once I found out where to mount it so it's not in the way.

So the truck has the tow package and I think that comes with the socket on the back of the truck. Is there anything else to do once the controller is plugged in? Is the socket already hard wired in so nothing else need to be done? I climbed under the truck and it all looks factory wired and ready to go.

You should be good to go only adjustment would be with your controller for the amount of brakes applied for what your going to tow.
