I bought a used headlight switch for my '96 Tacoma yesterday. I got it off of a 1989 Toyota pickup at a junkyard. The wiring connectors are not the same and there are more wires on the 1989 connector than there are on my Tacoma. I really need to be able to use my headlights, even in the daytime this time of year, so I want to hook these wires up correctly. Does anyone know where I can find the wiring schematics diagrams for either of these trucks?

I've got the electric schematics for a 1998. I don't think it's the same as your 1996 (Toyota used a different steering column/clock spring setup on the early trucks) but I can post pictures of the relevant pages tomorrow if you think that will be useful.

Do you have a multimeter or test light? It might be easiest to just hook up and test continuity between different pins as you fiddle with the switches. As long as the original switch is at least partially functional you can probably figure out most of the pins by process of elimination.

Thank you SO MUCH!!! I don't have a multi meter or a test light. I really appreciate you sending me that.

    TnShooter,

Well, I was able to open the link for a 1996 Tacoma but not the one for the '89. The one I was able to open was incredibly helpful and I thought I had it all hooked up right but it turns out, I still don't have headlights unless I hotwire them, which I did but I don't have taillights either. I know it's my connections but what I was hoping to find was a diagram or chart or a list of what color wire belongs to what part/switch in both the '96 and the '89 so I can make sure I hook up the new switch and everything else correctly, since the connector pieces are different on the two different truck years. I'm assuming the wire colors are the same (red with white stripe in an '89 is the same as red with white stripe in a '96) but the positioning of the wires was different and that confused me. Also, it didn't work but again, that might just be my novice electrical work that would probably make a real electrician want to choke me for even trying.

I need to get my headlights working though and I'm broke.
I appreciate your guys's help very much. I've learned more from these forums over the years than from any mechanic or person I know. I can almost fix everything on my own, thanks to you guys. I even replaced my transmission by myself last year and got the 4 wheel drive working. This is there first time I've ever posted anything.

Oh, btw, my boyfriend and I got the steering wheel off with a come along and it worked really well. Nobody lost any teeth or got a black eye or anything. We only broke one large drill bit in the process. But our success was thanks to you guys cuz I searched through the threads and read everything I could find before we tried it.
