The battery in my Tacoma came loose and after hitting a pot hole landed on top of the wiring harness. Harness heated up and started to melt. AC was running and fumes were coming into the cab. Got everything cooled off and the truck made it home. I think I read that in order to order a new harness it needs for done via the VIN. Can't seem to locate a vendor to order the harness and am also not sure if it's worth spending the money to try and fix it or if it would be better to sell it. Thoughts/suggestions are appreciated.

Everything works? A/C, blower, lights, charging ok? speedo/tac still working? If everything is still working, I wouldn't worry about it. If you just have to know if any damage was done, disconnect the battery and start disconnecting connectors everywhere in the cab and under the hood looking for burnt connections. USUALLY when something fries, you know it as something quits working or you smell burnt wires.

Should have been more clear. It definitely fried some of the wires. Just not sure how far past the harness. Cut open the tape to check the bundle of wire and some were in good condition, others not so much. Can't tell if some of them melted through the firewall or not.

Ok I would do this. Get a manual with a wiring schematic. Find out which wire is which and what it goes to. Locate a burnt wire, trace it. If multiple places are burnt through the insulation, replace the whole wire. If burnt in one spot throw some tape in it and call it good.

The harness is a dealer only item. Would be quite expensive. Another option is to find a wrecked Taco or 4runner of similar year. If memory serves me the harness near the battery is not too bad to remove. It includes the fuse box, and goes through the firewall to the integrated relay and to the steering column. The front portion includes the lights, horns and A/C compressor wire. The only crux is that particular harness is toast in a front collision, might be hard to find. Good Luck

    Thanks for the input.
