GMRS requires a license. No test just a $70 fee. Correct @Shellshock

I’m still trying to understand why gmrs is so expensive. It’s a huge turn off to do the right thing. Why can’t it be similar in cost as ham? I bet way more people would get licensed

How much was the test for ham?

Some folks may not be able to pass the exam

Basically every radio type / license has allowed frequencies and transmit power.

The free ones, less channels, less power.
Licenses like GMRS or ham allow you to use more power and more channels.
The higher tier ham licenses allow you to do all kinds of crazy stuff

Cb is limited to 4w but people will amplify that to put out more power to increase range and down out others, which if caught is a pretty hefty fine from the FCC.

With a Ham tech license i can do 200w+, although I’ve never had a reason to do anywhere close to that.

I just don’t think I’d ever really use it. I made cell calls on the pipeline last year. If I do my trip to Bryce Canyon or Zion N.P. and needed it for a emergency sure (I know @BEAR_KNIFE_FIGHT , better to have it and not use it)

When I use it we’re all basically in a row within 1/8-1/4 mile (5-10 trucks.)
Most places in Wisconsin have cell service.

I guess for me CB is just super cheap and I already have it. I get over 1 mile range with a mag mount. I was calling out for Camerasandcoffee from the little town down the road from us and and he was picking my transmission up.

So what does a base setup cost With everything ?

Is it better to have a front bumper antenna like the guy at Q5 communications @ the Madison Pine cone. He told me I was wrong and you can’t run a antenna off the rear of the truck.

Damn it.... see !!!!! You sucked right into a new thread. :anonymous:

    Thanks

I know GMRS and HAM have advantages. I got a CB because that's what everyone I knew was using. It still works fine. I'm sure I'll upgrade eventually. I was also the last person I know to get HDTV.

GMRS is changing to $35 but it hasn’t gone into effect yet. HAM licensing is increasing to $35.

Both are good for 10 years

It’s been approved by FCC, but needs one more approval before going live.

I'm not getting rid of my cb. It's simple, cheap and easy to get into. And it works for what it is. I might dip my toes into some newer technologies though.

I don't even have cable. :) I do have Amazon Prime, though.

I'm in the same boat. Keeping the CB, but maybe get a 2nd radio setup eventually

It’s funny that was my neighbor in the late ‘80s talking to his brother in London on the radio. His son would just shake his head and call his cousin on the phone at the same time.
