I have a CB/GMRS for the truck and UHF/VHF for work. I'm looking into some DMR stuff as well, trying to convince my roommate to take the Extra test with me.

I plan on running at least GMRS, UHF/VHF, and CB on the truck semi-permanently. The first I'd get rid of is GMRS -- enough people have CB that if I need to get a signal out, theres *more likely* someone listening on that. The downside is the lack of legal range. UHF/VHF allows you to do APRS which is a relatively good way to track/allow someone else to track your location. GMRS is kind of a weird middle -- ham enthusiasts aren't likely monitoring that range, and CB doesn't come close at all.

How hard is it really to get certified to use these comms?

GMRS is just an extortion fee that you pay, UHF/VHF/HF requires a test and fee. 3 different levels: tech, general, extra. If you have a decent understanding of EM physics you can pass tech just fine. The rest of them are easy to study.

Has anyone applied for their GMRS license recently. Whats the turn around from payment to receiving some kind of notification? For a communications agency their website is very slow and awkward, maybe it's my O.S but still. $70 for ten years isn't bad.

Mine took a few days when I updated it last year July.

Yeah, the FCCs website is ancient and it hurts my soul to use. Welcome to the federal government

I’m pretty sure it runs off some ancient computer under a desk somewhere
