Sadly, probably not. There's a slim chance I'd be able to get them mounted Saturday, but more likely next week Tuesday or Wednesday.

Someone posted a sexy picture of their truck with a swing a away and big tire hanging off the back a while back. Got me thinking about how I really like the idea of a swing a way but have never liked them in practice. I have tried three different iterations, and they all drive me nuts (because of how I camp and use the back of the truck.) So I had the kids help me make a thing:

    IMG_0591.jpg

Now the water is no longer on a swing a way. Just need to find a place for my propane tank now... @Snowy got a chuckle from the bohemian nature of my prior set up so maybe this rig can consolidate it some. Have to see what it feels like with those things full of water... Still a put on take-off kind a thing as I can't carry a bike with it on, but at least it is out of the way in camp. Made two, so for big adventures I can carry eight water paxs, and more if I extend and make double mouints...

I could understand how it looks that way. More optical illusion than anything, was just a quick photo. Probably mounting it tomorrow and will look much different then. And I have some new goodies already to mount on it!

Thus the crux of the problem... I like to sleep in the bed. Those four Pax represent 8 gallons of water. That is maybe three days with my wife and I. I have been out where some places are hard to find potable water and I don't like water stress. I also like to cook and that is water intensive... I guess I would like to hear how others who adventure off the beaten path make due. I have done several multi week trips and don't come back to civilization except for ice, gas and water (okay... food too.) The longer I can make those visits the better, and I tend to run out of water before gas...

You could consider a stainless steel water tank, something like 15-20 gallons. Lots of options out there that could be placed in the cab or the bed and pressurized.

I agree. But... stainless=$$$, and (I have to admit) I can't weld stainless to save my life. Harder to do a DIY. A cool plastic tank formed to fit where the longer back bench goes (passenger side) in the back seat would be the ticket. There are some out there for the bed that straddle the wheel bump, but I recall thinking that they took up to much space for sleeping.

Oh there will be some mods all right
Since you don't have a spare tire in the stock location I believe they make a water tank that goes in the same spot

Did a short search and didn't see anything specific to Tacoma. Those round ones that fit like my Roto pax gas ones are way TO expensive! Like the idea though.
