I submit the following to the local collective for input, thoughts, wise-ass comments. It’s unrelated to Tacomas, but maybe there are toyota commonalities that might trigger an idea with regard to my problem.

My parents have a 2000 Rav4 (1st gen), 4-door auto, 2wd. Instrument panel reportedly does not read speed. I recall being told it also does not light up. The local mechanic diagnosis was that it needs a new instrument cluster.

Anyway, the Rav4 is in Puerto Rico and they have not been able to find an instrument cluster on the island. Looked salvage around here, don’t see any popping up either. Searched for new from toyota parts by VIN…nada (I’d imagine new OE parts are long gone?)

Anybody know if instrument panels of this vintage are repairable?

Also, are these kinda of failures always instrument clusters? Or is there anything upstream that might result in instrument clusters going out? I’d like to trust the mechanic, but it was my aunt doing us the favor of taking it in to the mechanic…and not sure who she took it to (It may have been a guy with 20 disassembled cars in the front yard, or an actual mechanic).
