    Great thread of info.
I was wondering about the license, as well.
    Thanks.

There was a late model GMC on the way to work today.
Appeared to have upgraded his lights. As he was turning right all the lights, on the right side of his vehicle, were hyperflashing like no other. All of them.
About gave me a stroke. :)

As @wi_taco mentioned, we're all on GMRS now.

As @CygnusX191 mentioned, the license is pretty easy to get. Heck, if I can do it...

    Probably some cheapo HID'S.

Good thing we're all part of one big family here :D

From what I've gathered from a few contacts still with the feds, if one person in your immediate trail baba group has a license, they're cool with it as long as you're not breaking the rules like profanity or getting out targets for terrorist attacks or interfering with emergency operations, etc.

That being said, everything under four watts does not need a license. So if you're used to doing line of sight on low power transmission, which most if not all, GMRs radios can switch between one four and sometimes eight watt output, you should be good to go.

That seems more generous than I remember it. Have they changed it?

The little bit of trouble for the license is worth it. It’s got better range than CB, and theres hardly anybody using CB, which wont be of much help if you’re alone and need to depend on it. I only lost a few brain cells filling out the application. And you get your own federally recognized call number!!!

As others have said most of us are using GMRS. Mainly handy talkies. They are worlds better than CB. Even at lower wattage the sound quality is much better. Plusno more listening to some jack wagon 3 states away pushing 1K watts and blowing everyone off the air.
I do have a CB radio and antenna in the truck for group trips when someone only has CB.

Like @wi_taco points out above its a $35 no test (pay to play) license unlike a ham radio license.

Sounds like the way to go. Something for being out alone is what I'm looking for.
I choose the 'no test' option please!
    and bookmarked that midland page.

So my number finally came up. Somehow I've avoided the covid, despite working through lock down and being exposed probably on a daily basis ever since, but I tested positive Saturday. (It was probably that Black Keys show last week.) Hit me like a sledge hammer over the weekend, but I had some energy today and I've been watching some Star Trek and carving spoons. Got some new knives recently and I like 'em.

Watching the Pack now. Might even have a beer.
