I've been considering a dash mount for sometime. I found this on a 4Runners.com thread. It's not one of those "shelf" dash mounts that you have to drill the side of the dash trim to mount it. It is hidden above the head unit. It is a new design by Taco Garage. Because it is new, TG had a 25% off sale. If you were one of the 1st five people to do the install and provide a write-up with pics, they would refund 100% of the cost of the dash mount. I couldn't resist. Not sure if I was one of the 5.
They also have these for you Taco guys.
The balls are easily removable for a clean factory look.

EDIT: The offer does not extend to Tacoma's.

I have the DMM (tacoma version) from Taco Garage. Had it installed for almost 3 years now. Has been an excellent mount. Recommend.

Does anyone have experience with trailer brake controllers?

Browsing for a spare CV axle and decided that I don't really want to spend $350 for OEM when I can pick up one of these locally for $134. Lifetime warranty too. If I busted one of mine I might replace it with another OEM at some point, but I think one of these as a spare should work out fine. Anybody feel differently about that?

That's the one I carry as a spare. You're right in your thinking. The cheap spare can get you home, can always purchase OEM later.

Other than installing one about every five years or so as I buy a new rig, no.

Is a hard wired one better than the Bluetooth ones?

The camper dealer has a Curt Echo Bluetooth controller and a Redarc Tow Pro that mounts into one of the empty dash switch openings. It costs a bit more but supposedly is far easier to use.

If it mounts in the switch holes go for it! I mounted mine on the door for the fuse panel. Can't get to it to change anything very easy. Are they plug and play?

Supposedly, he has a Tacoma with one installed. Are brake controllers interchangeable or specific to what’s on a particular trailer?

There is a hardwired brake controller that was already in my truck when I bought it....
    Never needed to use it.
For the longest time I didn't know what it was.

When I put my OME suspension on, I had a CV boot start wearing and leaking. Replaced it with an AutoZone gold axle as a temp fix.

4 years later, that AutoZone axle has been on every single wheeling trip/event with my truck and is holding up great.

    dont get a bluetooth

the redarc is awesome. you can also pretty much hide it all except the knob when mounting it, there's a blank you can get that fits the holes in the taco with the cutout for the knob.

I had one of these in my tacoma (I put it in before the redarc was available)
    https://www.tekonsha.com/product/90195_trailer-brake-control-proportional

it worked fine but its a lot more of a pain to try and find a place to mount.
