Cygnus can say more, but in my experience, once you loosen that nut the damn thing almost falls out. Just wondering if the welding process induces a twist or other problem that can cause the problems. Having just put in new NSK's I am hoping for a long happy bearing life.

if you don’t have a radius on the recovery point, you can pretty easily break a soft shackle. Most recovery points have a 90 degree edge and you need to use a shackle.

also a kinetic rope stores energy.. that’s what kinetic means. It’s like a big rubber band and you need the right size for the weight of the vehicles. Bigger isn’t better in that scenario as it won’t stretch like it should.

Synthetic winch lines will usually just drop compared to steel cable. Totally different thing.

 

I would lean towards under-torquing.
My wrench goes to 150#'s and I had a hell of a time getting it to that.
150#'s is a lot.
Getting the axle in and out causing reduction in the life of the ball joint sounds like overthinking hog wash to me.
I must've had the axle bound at 1st because the nut got real tight shortly after the cotter pin hole.
Couple days later the brakes were getting spongy. (rotor was pushing the pads out because nut was too loose).
Took it back apart and got quite a few more threads out of it.

 

It was the soft shackle that failed.

And, kinetic ropes are like giant rubber bands, which is why they're dangerous. Regular straps are actually safer when used properly. The issue is when people try to use them like a kinetic rope.

Yeah. Tow straps are for slow pulls, not yanking. Things go seriously wrong in a hurry trying to use them like a kinetic rope.

Yup, he was wrong thinking that the soft shackle didn't cut because the sheath wasn't cut. Those hard edges put way too much pressure in a very small area. The rope was cut without cutting the sheath.

Taking a 20' run on a kinetic rope is just asking for trouble.

Listening to him repeatedly call a recovery point clevis was driving me nuts.

 

I bet you 200% it's not the wheel bearing so much as the axle.nut not being run in far enough/at the right torque. Use a wire brush to clean those threads off before you run the nut back on and heck, use it to clean the exposed threads off before you back. The nut off. Preparation goes a long way towards clean work. Highly recommend doing this. Especially for those of you whose wives drive CRVs and RAV4s. This will save your bacon.

Idk. The whole auto mechanic word is.... Shit. Warranty pay is criminal. Flat rate is criminal. Every single owner is a money grabbing asshat. I like the work. Hate the management. Only bright side is three other people are quitting on Monday, and their shop Foreman who had $6 an hour taken from him and his title because they don't need that service anymore is putting in his 2 weeks. As soon as he hears back from another dealership. He's done with their crap and he's been with them for like 15 years.

People who fuck up ball joints doing repairs to other components are missing the 17mm nut/bolt combo that attaches the ball join assembly at the bottom.
