I had one similar to this at my old apartment. Incidentally, I was thinking that I might pick up a grinder and Order whole bean coffee from Arbuckles. If I do, this is probably the one I'll buy.

The third day of vehicular mountain driving…

    Part 1(a).
This day was very loosely planned out. We had all the time in the world, we weren’t in a hurry, and we had supplies. Engineer Pass was on the agenda.

My friend had done these trails years ago when he lived here. He actually commuted to work from Ridgway to Telluride over Imogene on several occasions lol. He had faint memories of Engineer, and some of the offshoots and didn’t have many concerns about both of us being able to get up easily. What we didn’t do is consider that having all the time in the world includes both the daytime and night time. I wanna say there was an element of subconscious “accidentally/on purpose” negligence in our planning. Weather held out fine, but little things that come up during the day tend to suck up lots of time and changed our barely-made plans along the way. No big deal, since those things just made the whole thing an actual adventure. Not like Indiana Jones adventure…more like the self-inflicted, bumbling Top Gear/Grand Tour kind of adventure. But still, it was adventure.

This was the area of operations for the day/night.
    IMG_5195.jpg

We started the route to Engineer Pass just south of Ouray, taking the Mineral Creek trail, which was considered “hard” in the guidebooks we had. My friend had been on it and wasn’t too concerned. Turned out that trail was excellent wheeling all the way, pretty technical in spots, and in a few spots, it was both technical and had immediate downhill consequences on one side. As usual, off-camber sections usually end up tilting you to the downhill side. But I will say this…Tigerton really prepared me to tackle the technical spots with confidence. Used the locker a few times, was spotted a few times, but picking lines, throttle/momentum control (my nemesis), and traction wasn’t a problem for me all day.

Not many great pictures of the Mineral Creek portion since I was mostly busy driving, but I got some screenshots.IMG_5196.jpg

One of the reasons I think throttle control was easier for me is that this was all uphill. My buddy reminded me that downhill would be a bit more challenging given the consequences of a mistake. Something to consider given my tendency to do the brake jab dance…

We made it to the end of the mineral creek portion, where there is a three way intersection that goes to Poughkeepsie Gulch or to Engineer. It was a nice spot to pull off and go hiking a bit.

    IMG_4890.jpg

We both wanted to do the gulch, so it remained loosely on the agenda if we came back down this way. After a bit of walking around a quick bite, we kept going.

There was a very technical spot not far up the road. Got through it ok, but I’d say it was definitely sketch. It didn’t help that we ran into a parade of Toyotas coming down right there, and one of them decided to spot me…while my buddy was already spotting me. Sure, why not, test my powers of ignoring distractions lol. He even threw in “eek” faces as I went up the section lol. It actually helped with the nerves. Anyway, got over that section and we pulled over to watch the Toyotas go by. Definitely saw some nice instagram rigs go by!
    IMG_4892.jpg

A bit later, came across some fresh evidence of somebody’s “unfortunate miscalculation” at a switchback. I’m assuming the departed hood came from a vehicle coming downhill, given the height we gained going up in the switchback.
    IMG_5199.jpg

After this, it was mostly easy, with scattered moments of precautionary spotting on edgy sections.

We kept going uphill, and little by little I started to feel the effects of altitude.

As an aside, a couple days prior on the way up Imogene, I had gotten a few dizzies on the way up whenever I got out to walk around. But I learned to deal with it by breathing very consciously, and slowing way the hell down when I was walking around. I had a little bottle of oxygen they sell everywhere there just in case, but never felt a need to use it once I got used to breathing correctly. The next day we hiked around on our trip in the Owl Pass area, and felt fully acclimated to walking around at altitude. I thought I was good with regard to altitude.

But now, it felt weird…we weren’t that high yet, but I felt off. No dizzies, but just didn’t feel right. Cracked the O2 bottle open and took a few hits….nothing. Tried it again a few minutes later…still felt like shit. But not dizzy like on Imogene. And this was while I was sitting still as I was driving along, not walking around.

A little bit later, I noticed my buddies Jeep was trailing his own dust cloud like it was stuck to him. That’s when it clicked. We’ve had a tailwind for a good while now that happened to match our forward pace perfectly. My driver’s window has been open the whole time. It’s not altitude sickness, I’m getting gassed!!! I told my buddy over the radio that I’ve been sucking my own exhaust, and gotta pull over to recover a bit.

We hung out at beautiful spot for a bit (it’s all beautiful there). Initially, I felt pretty weak and couldn’t quite walk without holding myself up against the 4runner. I was honestly a bit shocked at how bad it was. Me and my buddy weren’t quite sure we should continue. But hey, we’ve got all the time in the world…lets take a good long break and see what happens.IMG_4914.jpg

    IMG_4911.jpg

    IMG_4917.jpg
    IMG_4913.jpg
Breathing in that beautiful mountain breeze for about 20 minutes had me walking around just fine and feeling much better. I hiked down the road and back up to test myself, and declared myself recovered.

After a quick huddle, we determined (on no actual data whatsoever) that we were probably more than half way to the top (more like a 1/3 of the way up in actuality). And since we’re halfway there, the only logical thing would be to continue, of course. We would worry about the trip down the mountain later today. In our best Wisconsin spirit…Forward!

    Part 1(b) next…

    Jynx!!! Read part 1(a) lol.

I managed to get a pic of the Telluride airport where they drove the Jaguar off the end. But an unfortunate composition error meant I didn’t frame the end of the runway in the shot…argh!IMG_4778.jpg

Pictures tend to take themselves in this area. So beautiful.

    :jerkoff:
a burr grinder is the preferred way to go as the finished grind is more consistent vs a blade grinder. This is similar to what I have:
    https://www.amazon.com/dp/B013R3Q7B2

Amazon has fancier hand grinders as well as portable electric.
The hand grinder isn’t bad if you are making a cup at a time. And allows me to properly fetishize my coffee. :jerkoff:
If you plan on making larger amounts for the family I would suggest an electric grinder.

No, I caught the reference just didn’t comment on it.
