    FJ's have a manual shift but it still has to communicate with the front ADD.

    I’m not sure if I’m thinking of the mechanics right, but you could try lifting the truck, select 4wd, turn on rear locker, then turn the rear wheels. If the transfer successfully engaged 4wd, then the front driveshaft should turn when you turn the rear wheels. If that happens, then I would suspect the ADD is not working.

    If the front driveshaft does not turn, then it’s the transfer case not engaging into 4wd.

    Somebody with more experience with this may chime in if I’m not correct, or if there is easier way to tell what’s what.

    I’ve even heard ADD deletes are a thing, if you dont mind both front axles spinning all the time.

    Your guess is wrong.

    Should have read the other part of my post that you took out When you made the quote lol. you would see the high-end racing absolutely has uses for that. I also talked about the fins in the rotors and how they're oriented, making it much larger impact on shedding heat, over drilled and slotted. Especially when you buy cheap drilled and slotted you really end up paying for it in excessive wear and tear.

    And if you're going to be off-road all drilled and slotted rotors do is collect mud and debris which makes your pads less effective so on and so forth.


    All that being said, since this is the internet, I am going to leave the disclaimer here because tone is hard to convey, I'm looking at this as a lively discussion and not anyone shaking sticks at each other. :cheers:

    Thanks for the feedback on the brakes.

    As far as slotted and drilled, in my experience in researching for the Audi rocket, I went with slotted, not drilled. I read that the slots effectively help with heat dissipation, but drilled holes just eat pads. Regardless, I ain't taking my truck on the track any time soon, so no need for that.

    Looks like these may be the pads I'll pick up. Thanks @Camerasandcoffee for the recommendation. Not sure I'll tackle the shoes in the back yet. I may pop off the drums and check them out. Watched a good video where a guy had over 100k I think on his, and they were at 4mm. New are 5mm.

    Any ceramic pads are a good buy, just make sure to bed them properly.

    As for the rear pads unless you are well over 100k the only thing to do would be to pull the drums & blow the dust out once in awhile.

    Can confirm my rears are at 4 mm and I've got 96,000 on it.

    Relentless Fab hybrid bumper, 2.5” Dobinsons IMS lift, RCI skids and sliders, block heater. Painted FJ Steelies. Was trying to keep it stock, now slowly building for the Wisconsin trails.
    As a slight counter point I replaced my rears at 85K and lets just say I got all my moneys worth out of them. I would opine that a combo of Tigerton and Arkansas mud is responsible for the shorter lifespan.

    The design behind slotted & drilled rotors or one or the other is not for heat so much as it is for releasing the gases that will build between pad & rotor during hard braking.

    Interesting. I'll definitely at least do an inspection and clean up of the rears. We'll see what I find.

    For what it’s worth, the 2nd gen T4R “big brake” upgrade uses the same exact model pads. I went with the “ultra premium” model P/n ASP976 and those you linked are the ProACT p/n ACT976. I’m sleeping in the back of a truck down by the river but from what I can tell the ACT line may have replaced the ASP line so same same. Good choice, I really like how mine perform.

    I went with Bosch QuietCast rotors and pads for the front then OEM for the back.

    Seems to have the same bite as OEM but will have to report back on longevity. Harder bite can be accomplished with upgraded brake lines. I like mine the way it is so far.

    I definitely recommend this stuff over the lube you get from the kits. It's safe around stuff that might swell.

    Sweet! Already had that tube of lube in my cart at RockAuto. I think I may still have a small tube in the garage from years ago, but it was only 6 bucks, and who wants to go searching for lube when you need it most! :D

    Some 4runners also have a manual shift T-case. But, we also rely on the ADD, so it's just one less actuator to worry about.

    Once I got the rod into 2WD it would not pull back out, by hand. Didn't try forcing it.
    However it does spin freely, whereas when it was in 4HI it would not spin.
    That's what made me wonder what, if anything, is connected to the other end?
    Was getting tired and put this on hold until the weekend. Have a feeling I need to drop the front skid plate and check out that front ADD (if that's what it is).
    Was reading about 2 positions for the front fork.

    With 140k on the Taco, the rear brakes still have life on them. I don't know if anything was done by the prior owner. I haven't done brakes myself since high school. I do remember one thing. Blowing off drum brakes can be very unhealthy.
    With all the technological skills with group I could see a mod/brake day next year.

    Apparently I’m not doing Needles Hwy today…drove in starting from the east and road is closed. They had a fire couple days ago and I think they are doing road construction to fix something related to that. Blah.
