I have a bad feeling a new/used transfer case is in the forecast.
Sir Manuel shows a couple detent balls and springs holding the rod in position.Screenshot_20241008_184457_Drive.jpg
I'm thinking those springs are jammed in the path.

Going to drain the fluid and look for metal before driving it again.

The rod being able to turn in 2wd is bothering me more than not turning in 4wd.

I had something similar happen on a rifle build.
The detent ball for the front breakdown pin got lodged in the slot and I couldn't get the pin out.

Should be fine that the rod spins because the gear in the actuator holds it in place.
Once the detent ball breaks the groove, the rod will roll smoothly to the next position.
It shouldn't take a lot of force for that detent ball to break the plane.
If I can't pull that back by hand.
IMO. It's f"$%×D unless I open it up.

IIRC the end of the rod should be bolted to the shift fork, meaning no turny.

Thanks all hope that photo cam through OK and don’t get shrunk too much. Truly breathtaking view up there on top of the world, doesn’t feel real.

Hurt my right foot pretty bad so tomorrow is not going to be a hiking day. Lesson to pass on: doesn’t matter if you used to log hundreds or possibly thousands of miles caddying or hiking, if you get fat and choose a monster hike like that as your first one of the year off the couch it’s gonna be a bad time at the end. Stock up on painkillers.

Also no I don’t get a sweet roll as take-away. I love cinnamon rolls but those are just too big to take seriously and kinda makes my stomach queasy thinking about eating one that big. Moderation.

Pretty decent cell signal at camp, surprisingly. Going to be an early night though for rest, may not even eat dinner with that monster burrito still swimming around in there.

Almost 24k steps, about 7 miles in/out, and 1,300ft elevation change. Night night.

I'd pull the case and open it up. It's really not that hard.

The shift fork is inside the case. Looks like this. ( this is in my crawl box but they are parts out of a toyota case)

This is the low range planetary set same as what's in your case.

It's the only way to find out what's going on. Even if I picked up a salvaged case it has to come off.

I'm just trying to accept that I have to tear into it.:blahblah:

Me! I have a shopping cart full of brake parts over there that I haven't yet pulled the trigger on. I'd appreciate it.
