On the 3rd gen, it is controlled by the ecu. On the second gen and tundra and others it is not.

In fairness my comment about doing it through tech stream, I was misremembering the feature in there for 3rd gen's. It's just a testing function. It doesn't actually allow you to set the program, that has to be done through the tuning software. Which is how both of mine are set up through the tuning software because tune is better than not tuned. Lol

Shouldn't the alternator be putting out around 14V to begin with?

It does. But it can put out 14.2-4 which is more better or something

I did it for a while but switched back to stock and just put a solar panel on the hood. It makes way more difference

It's a range, but the idea was that the midline was bumped up.
    .that being said

These alternators still won't keep an AGM topped off at 100%, hence @Shellshock 's recommendations of trickle chargers etc

Yeah, I understand that AGM batteries tend to charge at a slightly higher voltage. I was just curious. I've never seen a good alternator only putting out 12, though.

It’s because someone read that it’s better for agm to charge at higher voltages then people went off the rails thinking that if you didn’t, it would die in 6 months and its terrible for them.

in typical internet fashion it was blown way out of proportion by people that don’t know what they are talking about.

In my experience it makes basically zero real world difference, that’s why I undid it on mine.

Yeah, I've had an AGM for 2 and a half years and it hasn't died yet. The plan was to put it on a trickle charger once every month or so, but it hasn't happened yet.

My Silverado needs tires. I made a trek to Tenn. last week to start moving the F-I-L. The tires are 12 years old, and I knew that I was rolling the dice not replacing them before I left. There is plenty of tread and the tires are not cracked at all. Probably from using Armor-All every wash. (I had to mention that as tire shine does more than make your tires shiny, cough, cough @LarryDangerfield, @Thatbassguy) Fortunately there were no issues. After 2 days of getting the truck and trailer unloaded and putting stuff away, I called Discount Tire to see about getting a set of Mickey Thompson Baja Boss'. I have read that they are great in the rain and snow. Living in the country, snow performance is priority #1 for me. Discount Tire won't mount 285's on the factory 7" wheels. WTF? I've had 3 sets of 285's on these wheels. They said there were problems with wider tires de-beading on narrow wheels. Told them I have been running 285's for over 20 years without a hiccup. They said no go. Won't do it. I then called the Goodyear store and I have an appt. to have set of Duratracs installed on Monday. Duratracs were my #2 pick. I have had 2 sets of Goodyear Silent Armor on the pick-up, and they have made that truck a beast in the snow. I hope the Duratracs are as good as the Silent Armors.

You didn't want to try the Firestone Destination AT2s that I had on my truck before the Mickeys? Those were great tires in the snow and you saw what I could do with them on the trails. Not sure what the price would be in your size, but definitely cheaper than the Mickeys.

No, I didn't even consider Firestones. I was truly impressed with the tires you had, but that fiasco Firestone and Ford had years ago still resonates with with me. Firestone is dead in my mind. I've never seen Firestones on the trail other than yours.

Wasn't that you that I mentioned to about making sure the tire shop would put 285's on a 7"?

    Not all will.
